Today, the world is facing a pandemic that has already changed the lives of millions of people. While the number of COVID-19 cases and infections are rising and people are being forced into isolation, there doesn’t seem to be an immediate solution. In this fight against the deadly virus, everyone is looking for something to hold on.
Amidst all the worrying news, a message of hope and solidarity from Switzerland reached all the way to India today. One of the highest peaks in Switzerland, Matterhorn, was illuminated with an Indian flag for a few hours as a symbol of solidarity in this fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
Created by Swiss light artist, Gerry Hofstetter, the image was projected onto the 14, 692 foot tall peak at the Swiss Alps. It is a part of the nightly series by the town of Zermatt in Switzerland to show their support to all the people who are currently suffering from coronavirus and those who are helping to overcome the crisis.
Taking to Twitter, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared the photograph and tweeted, “The world is fighting COVID-19 together. Humanity will surely overcome this pandemic.”
Since March 24, Switzerland has been sending messages of hope and solidarity by projecting different images by the artist on the mountain peak. The flags of the US, Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Spain, the UK and Japan have also been illuminated on the mountain. Some webcams have been set up for people to watch the light show from their homes.
