On occasion of my first wedding anniversary and the end of lockdown, we decided to do a short getaway to Lake District National Park. We booked a 4 days trip from Viator a TripAdvisor company. It is located in Northern UK county of Cumbria.
We began our journey to Lake District by 12:30 noon and reached Windermere by 4pm. It is a 3.5 hrs train ride from London. The views on our way were spellbound. Lush green meadows, misty mountains was perfect to begin with. I knew we made a great decision for choosing this location.
Our stay was arranged at Hotel Lindeth Howe, one of the properties once owned by Beatrix Potter. She was a famous children book author,a scientist and a businesswoman. It was a 34 room hotel located near Bowness Pier and 10 minutes driving distance from the Windermere station.
As it was a half day tour, we thought of exploring the Windermere market to buy some souvenirs for our family back home. We booked a cab and reached the market. This market town is at a walking distance to the Bowness Pier. Our pick up was arranged from the pier for our tour ahead.
Our first stop was at Wray Castle a neo-gothic Victorian castle situated on the shores of lake Windermere with turrets, towers, and informal grounds.
We later move to Hawkshead a quaint medieval village in Cumbria. We enter, one of the beautiful church premises located in a fine position overlooking the village and fells. It has lots of cafes and inns nearby to grab a quick bite.
Te next stop was a popular tourist attraction and a pictureque tarn. It is called Tarn Hows.
Our day ended by cruising on Lake Windermere. The boat sailed from Ambleside pier to Bowness Pier.
Truly one of the best days of the whole trip as we could experience nature at it's truly best. With views of snow capped mountains, narrow roads meandering between the valleys, and a lucky chance to see a brilliant sunset. What more could I ask for?.
As there are plenty of Lakes in the region, Thus, the region gets its name. There are total of 16 major lakes and other water bodies. We managed to cover the spectacular 10 Lakes in the order of our travel : Windermere, Rydall water, Grasmere, Thirlmere, Bassenthwaite lake, Ennerdale Water, Buttermere, Crummock Water, Ullswater, Brothers Water.
On our way we also visited other beauty spots like the Castlerigg Stone Circle- A stonehenge like stone circle surrounded by stunning views of fells. Honister Slate Mines - home to iconic Westmoreland green slate.
Finally on our way back to the hotel we managed to see a brilliant sunset at the Kirkstone Pass. A perfect way to end our tour.
Time to say Goodbye to this epic trip.
"You may leave the Lake District, but once you've been, it'll never leave you.."
So apt. Mere words or picture cannot do justice to the beauty of this place. I'm still reminiscing the lush green valley, snow capped mountains, unforgettable views.
