Weekend Getaway In West Bengal - Jhargram

Tripoto

In this busy fast life everyone is searching for weekend gateways from cities. I have started to showcase some of the popular weekend gateways from Kolkata.

Previously published my trips to DARJEELING KALIMPONG and SHANTINIKETAN.

As a traveller and explorer I would love to present beautiful places of my Bengal.

So, my 3rd destination on this list is JHARGRAM in west midnapore district .

You can go to jhargram via train or you can rent a car/ drive to fully enjoy a roadtrip.

Time taken around 3.30 hr. It's well connected by rail and highway.

Jhargram also popularly now known as jangalmahal after recent maoists activity. Though you can safely visit there without hesitation and don't rely upon rumors.

Located near river dulung it is a historical place that has 350yrs old royal palace, old Durga temple, tribal villages with the essence of true raw rural Bengal.

Where nature is untouched, people and wildlife live hand in hand , you will find solace 2days from your busy schedule will fill you with fresh air and memories.

WBTDC has a beautiful resort at jhargram just beside rajbari (palace) . A/c Rooms are available at a very decent price 1800, meals are also very tasty.

For booking you can search in West Bengal tourism website. We didn't book prior though, as it was a day trip, we booked on spot as rooms were available. But it's in holidays make sure you confirm rooms prior.

Also one part of the rajbari also been made hotel , you can book rooms there too. Mainly present family members still live in the palace.

In 1570 AD raja Sarveshwar Singh Chauhan came to this region in the era of great Mughal emperor Akbar and conquered this place formerly known as jharikhand. Then made this palace and named the place jhargram. From then it's maintaining it's legacy and now it's a place of art . The palace is Western and Muslim architecture.

I couldn't capture images inside the palace as it's restricted area. only if you book a room there, you can get to see places inside that too one small part.

From rajbari you must go to kanakdurga temple. It takes around 20min to reach to chilkigarh temple.

If you are not a religious person then also you must visit the place. As it's a place of history, place of nature.

The old ancient temple, made in 1348 is in dilapidated state. It is said that the then raja(emperor) got a dream from Devi(goddess) to make a temple and worship her. Then they found one idol in the jungle near the dulung river. That's how the temple was established and worshipping of goddess Durga started. The name kanakdurga means golden Durga.

As the name suggests the idol is gold plated and it is a piece of art.

Be safe from monkeys around the temple premises. There are a lot of them.

You can go beside river dulung. Boat riding is also offered there.

Chilkigarh is 14km from jhargram. There is also one palace but not in very good condition. We didn't get time to go there as were in a hurry. But if you spend one night you must include that for a quick visit.

This is perfect place to go in the afternoon after lunch. You will need more than a hour to cover the whole zoo. If you are having kids with you they might not be interested in history much but will surely love this place.

One request please educate your child to respect nature and wildlife, not to make noise close to animals. I was disheartened to see children making so much noise near animals and also their parents trying to get attention of animals.

There are monitor lizard, star tortoise, deer, nilgai, elephant, bear, wolves, hyena, leopard, porcupine etc. Various birds like peacock, vulture, hawk, parrots, badri, crane, duck, emu and various others.

Also there are many varieties of snakes.

Many injured or rescued animals and birds are taken care of here . Also they are freed into the wild afterwards.

I am very lucky to have relatives in kharagpur. So I visited jhargram in a day trip. But if you are staying at jhargram you can pay a visit to prestigious IIT kharagpur during return journey. Kharagpur is around 1 hour from jhargram depending on road conditions.

Also kharagpur railway station is famous for being the longest platforms. Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni also started career as a railway serviceman at kharagpur station.

## best time to visit ~~ from October to april. *Best in winters as you can see many migratory birds and weather also very soothing.

## spend one night there to enjoy nature's beauty. Eat fresh vegetables and local fish or meat.

## wbtdc rajbari tourist complex is the best place to stay at jhargram. Also you can book other hotels near zoo.

## nature is our savior. Don't litter in these places as ecosystem easily gets affected.
