Cyclone Amphan has created a huge havoc in the city of Kolkata and other parts of eastern states. The cyclone hit the city at around 2:30 PM on Wednesday. The gust of winds and rain lasted for more than six hours and turned the entire city upside down. Some photos from Kolkata airport and other places have been circulating on the internet that tell a tale of a devastated city — uprooted trees, damaged power lines, and destroyed buildings.
Cyclone Amphan is the worst cyclone to form over the Bay of Bengal since records began and the first super cyclone since 1999. The cyclone majorly crossed over North and South 24 Parganas, Midnapore, Hooghly, and Kolkata.
Here are some photos that showcase the destruction caused by the cyclone:
Kolkata airport has been severely damaged by the cyclone.
Along with the aircraft, two hangars were also destroyed in the cyclone.
Flooded runway at Kolkata airport hampered daily operations and as a result, the airport will remain shut for two days.
Local transport buses parked in different parts of Kolkata also suffered damages due to the cyclone. Most of the vehicles were crushed under big trees.
In an attempt to restore normalcy, people are coming together to help each other. Several people were seen clearing the destruction post cyclonic winds.
A man cuts branches of an uprooted tree after Cyclone Amphan subsided. Rescue operation is being conducted at rapid speed to restore electricity and communication.
The violent winds didn't spare anything. An Audi car was severely damaged by the cyclone.
In a series of heartbreaking pictures circulating over the internet, this one is from book market at College Street. A man was picking up partially torn books floating in the stagnant rain water.
COVID crisis has barred the government from using the evacuation shelters to full capacity. Millions have been moved to the shelters right in time but there are still many looking for a safer refuge.
The lifeline of Kolkata, signature yellow taxis too got stuck in the flooded roads of the city. The city seems to have come to a halt.
It is speculated that state has to bear a loss of 1 lakh crore.
Let's pray that people affected by Cyclone Amphan may overcome their losses.
