This place is heavenly. The view of Mount Kanchenjunga is totally clear. You can see the gigantic “Sleeping Buddha” from Tonglu view point and the beautiful sunrise of Mt. Kangchenjunga which is very interesting.
Tonglu is one of the higher peaks of the Singalila Ridge and a small settlement inside the Singalila National Park in Darjeeling district in the state of West Bengal in India. This place is located near the India – Nepal border. Tonglu is 3,070 m (10,070 ft) higher from the sea level. This is the eastern portion of Himalayan Range. There is a small village named Tumling which is located 2km. away from Tonglu also there is a very beautiful valley between Tonglu and Tumling.
The nearest Railway Station is New Jalpaiguri, West Bengal and the nearest Airport is Bagdogra, West Bengal. The trek begins from Dhotrey, which is approximately 6 hours drive from New Jalpaiguri. During the journey you can enjoy the natural view of hills and tea estates. Dhotrey is a small forest village and you should stay a day in this beautiful village. There are so many home stays for staying , also you can eat some authentic foods of Nepal in Dhotrey. The next day if you want to trek to Tonglu then you have to take a local guide with you, otherwise you can get lost in the jungle also you can book a land rover from Dhotrey to Tonglu. But if you like adventure then you should trek to Tonglu. It will take approximately 5 hours to reach tonglu. You should take some dry foods along with you like Cashew, Almond, Kismis, chocolate etc.. If you are lucky then you can see the Red Panda during the trek which is an extinct animal. You can stay in the GTA (Gorkhaland Territorial Administration) in Tonglu. But you have to book it before you go. The main office of GTA is in Kolkata.
The weather of Tonglu is very chilling and at night the temperature comes to minus degree so you should keep jackets and warm cloths along with you. If you want to enjoy the sunrise of Mount Kanchendzunga then you have to wakeup early morning. There is a lot of wind which will make too much colder. But you’ll forget everything each time you look at the beautiful sunrise of Mount Kanchenjunga and the gigantic Sleeping Buddha laying in front of you.
