We were hovering across the main strand of the gigantic Rabindra Setu(Howrah Bridge).
We knew that we were late so we had no time to waste.
Sprawled by the side of the mighty river Hugli,Mallick Ghat is one of its kind place. It starts where the bridge ends and spreads by the river bank for a kilometer across the line.
A gust of moist wind, over-brimmed with the overpowering smell of millions of florae ,hit our nostrils, as soon as we reached the winding streets of Mallick Ghat.
The riveting aura of flowers made us believe in the myth, that we kept on listening for last thousands of years! The largest flower market of India definitely is one of the fanciest street experiences of our lives.
Marigold, tulips, night jasmine called our eyes and articulated their beauty. Lying by the street, the great lotuses sympathized the falling Sun, during the early morning hours.
“Buddy,We should go and ask someone about the history of the place”,Sayantan called me back in the world of reality.
The vast amount of colors reflected its own anecdote on my psychedelic senses.
I already had plans to throw some questions to the suitable vendor, so soon I had to untwine my probable question.
“The market is pretty old. It has been decorating the world of Kolkata for last 65-70 years”, Gopal Sharma, a local vendor, was very pleased to inform his part of the story.
We got to know that the main purchasing ground of Mallick ghat is Kolaghat, Mecheda, Chandannagar and other subsidiary areas, located by the Ganges.
“The market starts early in the morning, before dawn, and it fades its glorious phase before seven in the morning. So you guys are just on time”, he added to entwine our emotions.
The great Bazaar of flowers really mesmerized our spirits. We started documenting each and every flowers we saw. The lavender and the jasmine seller, Gopal Sharma, a proud owner and now that he sold his story, he seemed to be prouder.
Mallick Ghat is stretched up to few kilometers by the river. It has two main street markets. When we entered the eastern branch of it, we were greeted by the pedestrians, such as Cows, buffaloes, who were grazing on the left out succulent pods and leaves. Though, they crammed us for some space initially, but later we managed our way out ,and poked our lenses wherever possible.
The Lilles and Orchids, the Hibiscus and the Sunflowers, the Roses and the Crotona, all waved us as we crawled our ways through the alleyway. The mystical morning and the light drizzles gave it a touch of tenderness. The aroma of the flowers hooked us for more than one hours. We knew if it were not for this vast plethora of florae ,we could never ever possibly identify a place like that.
A place located by the bank of the river, sandwiched in-between the river and the long sprawling over bridges and streets, Mallick Ghat comes up as a great street market. A flower market which draws attention of the aliens and the natives. A flower market which kicks us to wake up as early as 4:30 in the morning. It has to be Mallick Ghat ,the paradise for the flower lovers and the photographers..t we were late so we had no time to waste.
