On the 12th of April 2023, Kolkata Metro created history by running under the might Hooghly River! And we cannot help but be impressed by this feat. As per the official statement this is the first time in India that Metro has completed this epic river journey.
The General Manager of Metro Railway – P Uday Kumar Reddy along with HN Jaiswal (Additional General Manager), Kolkata Metro and MD, KMRCL as well as other senior officers of Metro Railway and KMRCL boarded the rake (No. MR-612) that crossed the river Hooghly and travelled from Mahakaran to Howrah Maiden station, to witness this glorious moment. The General Manager offered puja after the rake reached Howrah station at 11:55 hrs. After which Rake No MR- 613 was also taken to Howrah Maidan station.
P Uday Kumar Reddy also informed that the trial on the 4.8 km underground section from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade will be conducted for the next 7 months after which regular services on this stretch will begin. The General manager additionally stated that the commercial services can be expected to be operational in the 2023 itself.
The Howrah Maidan-Esplanade stretch is a part of Kolkata Metro’s East-West Corridor. After the opening of this stretch, the East-West Corridor will have 12 stations – Howrah Maidan, Howrah station complex, BBD Bagh (Mahakaran), Esplanade, Sealdah, Phoolbagan, Salt Lake stadium, Bengal Chemical, City Centre, Central Park, Karunamoyee, and Salt Lake Sector-V.
Once open this stretch from Howrah will be the deepest Metro station (33 meters below the surface) in the country! The Metro which will run through the 32 meters deep tunnel is expected to cover the 520-meter stretch under the river Hooghly in 45 seconds.
The Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) had announced in 2022 that the East-West Metro Corridor project, which will be India's first underwater metro service, is anticipated to be finished by December 2023.
