Winter mornings in Kolkata are just cold enough to give you a slight shiver which makes you yearn for an extra cup of bhaarer cha. Going for rounds of coffee at the Coffee House, sharing packets of cigarettes and engaging in lengthy debates on politics. Winter in Kolkata is a vibe.

An early morning rider in the Maidan

An pre-dawn walk in Maidan is a favorite with all Calcuttans. Located in the heart of the city, this park, bordered by The 42 on one side and the Victoria Memorial on the other, is the ideal location for photography. Give a wonderfully moody and atmospheric feel to your subjects and you walk through the fog, past local youths playing cricket or people going for their morning run.

The Victoria Memorial

While the Victoria Memorial, one of the most prominent monuments in Bengal, evokes nostalgia among the Calcuttans throughout the year, the Queen's Palace looks even more splendid during those early winter mornings. Relatively empty during the early hours, the palace is only a mere walk from the Maidan and has great potential for photography. The Victoria Memorial opens its gates quite early and with a fee of 20/-, you can enter the spacious grounds of the palace. Entry into the museum is still restricted.

Ghat Stories

The Howrah Bridge is the photographer's delight. Nothing captures the imagination and the lenses of both tourists and Kolkata photoholics like the iconic Howrah Bridge, the bustling cantilever road bridge spanning the Hoogly River.

Be it summer or winter, the view of the bridge from Mallik Ghat is something that is cherished by all Calcuttans. Walk through the flower markets of Mallik Ghat to get some brilliant street shots as well a magnificent view of the Howrah Bridge towering above the Hoogly River.

Mullick Ghat is 5 km from the Victoria Memorial and there are buses taking you to the Ghat from the Memorial.

This entire season in this city is redolent of nostalgia. Memory lanes get exceedingly crowded, with heritage walks, Christmas in Park Street and choir practices. Indeed, winter is the time for romancing the city in the best way possible. And if you happen to be a shutterbug, you are in luck!
