Darjeeling in Late August: A Mixed Bag of Beauty and Chaos

Nestled in the lap of the Himalayas, Darjeeling has always been a dream destination for travelers seeking a blend of serene landscapes, colonial charm, and vibrant culture. My recent trip to this hill station in late August left me with a bouquet of memories — some magical, others bittersweet. Here’s a rundown of my experiences.

Journey to Udaan Himalayan Suites

After landing at Bagdogra Airport, we embarked on a scenic journey to our hotel, Udaan Himalayan Suites. The drive, which took around 3.5 hours, was a mix of winding mountain roads and lush greenery. Upon reaching the hotel, we were greeted with warm hospitality, delicious food, and a cozy ambiance that made us feel right at home. The hotel staff went above and beyond to ensure our comfort, setting a perfect tone for the trip.

Exploring Darjeeling: Highlights of the Trip

1. Early Morning Visit to the Peace Pagoda
The Peace Pagoda was our first stop, and we arrived early to soak in the tranquil vibes. The morning mist added an ethereal charm to the pagoda, and the rhythmic chants of the monks created an atmosphere of pure serenity. It was the perfect way to start the day.

2. Darjeeling Zoo and Mountaineering Institute
The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is a must-visit, especially if you’re fascinated by Himalayan wildlife. From red pandas to snow leopards, the zoo is home to many rare species. Adjacent to the zoo is the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, a tribute to mountaineering legends like Tenzing Norgay. The museum here offers a deep dive into the history of Himalayan expeditions.

3. Darjeeling Toy Train: A Mixed Experience
Riding the iconic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was a nostalgic experience, though I must admit it wasn’t as enchanting as I had imagined. The journey to Batasia Loop, priced at ₹1500 per person, offered picturesque views but felt underwhelming compared to the hype. However, the loop itself, with its manicured gardens and war memorial, made for a pleasant stop.

4. Darjeeling Tea Estates
A visit to Darjeeling would be incomplete without exploring its famed tea gardens. Walking through the emerald-green plantations with the aroma of fresh tea leaves in the air was an absolute delight. We even tasted some freshly brewed Darjeeling tea, which was as exquisite as the views.

The Weather and Kanchenjunga Views

August is usually cloudy in Darjeeling, but we were fortunate to catch a glimpse of the majestic Kanchenjunga. The golden hues of the sunrise reflecting on the snow-capped peaks were a sight to behold. The weather was another highlight — cool and refreshing, making every outdoor activity enjoyable.

A Note on Darjeeling’s Crowds and Cleanliness

While the town’s beauty remains undeniable, Darjeeling has become noticeably more crowded and less clean than it used to be. The bustling streets and lack of proper waste management were a bit disappointing. It’s a reminder of the challenges that popular tourist destinations face in balancing preservation with tourism.

Final Thoughts

Despite some drawbacks, Darjeeling remains a charming getaway, especially for nature lovers and history enthusiasts. The mesmerizing views of Kanchenjunga, the peaceful aura of the monasteries, and the lush tea estates make it worth a visit. If you’re planning a trip, late August might surprise you with fewer crowds and pleasant weather — just don’t forget to carry an umbrella for the occasional drizzle!
