Banasura Sagar Dam Reviews

Calicut railway station gave us a warm welcome and the already arranged minivan was waiting for us, our first stop was Thusharagiriwaterfalls as we badly needed a shower after a long journey. The waterfall is located on the way to Wayanad from Thamaraserry. We had no idea that it is a three-tiered waterfall and we have to trek quite some distance to reach each falls. The first fall was kinda near to the entry point and we started to walk towards the second one, the path slowly started to get steepened and yeah many of us started to tire. But still, we marched on, we found a small fall and some stagnant water in between the rocks (like a natural pool :P) on the way and we ran and jumped into it. THAT WAS SOOO COLDD and SO GOOD... We had some crazy time there, got a refresh, and came down as our schedule was kinda tight. Even though we couldn't see the main falls, that was a decent warm-up for the next day's big trek. We then stopped by Lakkidiviewpoint where we could see an amazing view of the way we have come across from Calicut. Clicked some cool snaps. We then tried Zipline on the way to Banasura Dam. It was first of this kind experience for most of us, flying over lush tea plantation and we cherished the moment. Our last destination of the day was the largest earth dam in India, Banasura Sagar Dam. It was indeed a great evening there, hot Chai, cool clickz with a beautiful background of the reservoir and of course witnessed a stunning sunset behind the vast spread water body. The homestay (Swastha Heritage Homestay) we booked was located nearly 1-hour drive west of the Banasura and it was in an isolated place in the middle of nowhere (Guys loved it). We had a decent dinner, a memorable campfire, and did wind up our day. A Huge day was ahead of us.
We had our lunch - a sumptuous Kerala meal in a restaurant on our way to Dam, could find tourist spots like bamboo rafting, zip lining etc.., Our driver was nostalgic recollecting his childhood spent around the dam, when the gates were opened he often accompanied his friends to catch huge fishes which would transverse towards lower canals. The reservoir holding the backdrop of Banasura Hills coupled with islands offered a scenic beauty. Mobiles weren't equipped ( 13 Megapixel ) to capture the farthest point in clarity but our eyes ( 576 Megapixel ) did capture this and would remain forever etched in our lives. We started to ascend the dam to reach boating point and it was mentioned at the counter that the boating was closed, still unfazed we enquired and were happy to know the ride for speed boat and steamer was closed while Coracle ride and Kayaking is available. Without any further inhibition we boarded the first Coracle ride for the day. We experienced the beauty of being in the midst of Green Banasura Hills on a Coracle wading through Asia's 2nd Largest Earth Dam. The water depth spans as deep as 750metres ( 2400 feet ) and the young chap maneuvering the Coracle gave much insight of the lake and the surroundings. We also opted for kayaking and spent another half an hour navigating through the reservoir. After a disappointed start of the day ( Chembra Peak ) we couldn't have asked for anything else even fulfilling than this by the end of the day, we took few more pics for the day and embarked our journey back to hotel. We purchased few essentials like tea, coffee, spices, raw honey etc., The Jeep driver was kind and post dinner at a food stall we marked an end to an eventful day.
Built on the River Kabini at a height of 270 metres, this is yet another beautiful dam located in God’s own country, Kerala. A set of islands that were formed when the reservoir submerged the surrounding areas, with the Banasura hills in the background make up for one of the most picturesque sights and a popular tourist destination. Enclosing Kabini’s Karamanathodu tributary, Banasura Sagar dam is the largest earthen dam in India and the second largest of its kind in Asia owing to the hardened pile-up of stones, rocks, and soil, structured as a dam. Located in Kalpetta, this is among the most visited destinations in Northern Kerala. The dam also offers a trek at the Banasura Hill, the zenith of which provides a spectacular view of the valley with mist covering the hills of Wayanad. From pedal boat to a speedboat, the dam has an option for you to glide over the crystal clear water making way through the islands that garnish the lake. There is also a nature park near the boating area. The Banasura Hill Resort which is about a 20 km distance from the dam was rated Asia’s largest Earthen Resort by BBC.
Our energy level was low on the last day, as a lot of trekking on other places we went by and chose not to walk excessively as we do have negligible time that day and need to reach Calicut before 7 PM and needed to close our sightseeing before 3 PM. We reached the dam around 9.45 and bought the entry tickets . Boating and children play area tickets can be bought in their respective places. Banasura Sagar Damis the Asia's 2nd largest dam of water reservoir. One of the premier attractions of Wayanad and other sightseeing places is also nearby this place (Pookot Lake and Waterfalls). It does have 1.5 KM of trekking to reach the crest of the dam. As decided, our family members don't prefer to trek nor they are not willing to walk that day : ). So we looked for options and found there is Jeep facility available for us to reach the top of the dam. The list of attractions in the Dam with Cost
Outside the temple we had our breakfast. I tried puttu which is a breakfast dish of steamed cylinders of ground rice layered with coconut. I was told they looked better when served hot but I enjoyed them what so ever. And you must definitely try them. They are served with "Potato and peas curry" . We were running out of time so we dropped the plan to trek to "Chembra peak" and decided to visit Banasura sagar Dam instead. It was enormous and there at the entrance I saw the most delicious and spicy Mango slices !!!!
