Laos - The hidden treasure of Southeast Asia

Tripoto

Laos lies at the heart of the Indochinese Peninsula and is bordered by Myanmar, China, Cambodia and Thailand. Though the country is landlocked, it is thickly forested, has rugged mountains and the Mekong river flows along the western boundary. Buddhism is dominant in the region and is a part of the country's culture, temples and art.

How to reach Laos?

There is a connecting flight from New Delhi to Vientiane through Bangkok with a 2 hour layover. Download the Luca app once you reach Wattay international Airport. You can get a sim card at the airport with enough data to last through the trip. The currency is the Lao Kip and 1 USD is approximately 20,000 Lao Kip. Laos is relatively cheaper than Thailand and Vietnam in terms of lodging and food.

Things to do in Vientiane

Vientiane is the capital and the largest city of Laos. The city is located on the banks of Mekong river. You can take a tuk-tuk to ride you through the streets and visit the most important monuments of the city.

Where to go next?

Take a ride to the quiet town of Vang Vieng . This is a small town nestled between Vientiane and Luang Prabang. This place is known for its activities such as kayaking, hiking and tubing. You can walk around town or rent a bike. There are some great places that serve local food and beer. So do not miss having some local beer (Beerlao and Laung Prabang) and delicious local food (Larb and Papaya Salad - Don't forget to ask for the less spicy version!!).
