Cocooned from the usual tourist frenzy, Varkala is a modest coastal municipality situated in north Trivandrum, Kerala. A unique feature of Varkala is its sheer cliffs that mark the periphery of the town and plunge straight into the Arabian Sea. The ruddy cliffs, stretching over 2-3 kms, are formed of tertiary sedimentary deposits and have been named the Varkala Formations by the GSI. The sunset, as seen from our resort atop the Varkala Cliffs, mesmerised us, as did the beauty of the waves crashing all day long on the rocks in their foamy, frothy splendour! Varkala has a small but bustling market that houses stores selling quaint souvenirs. The place attracts droves of foreign tourists and harbours hipster vibes.
We stayed in Varkala for a couple of days as part of our 10-day road trip along the coastline of Kerala in December-end 2022,and came back with a cache of glorious, briny memories of the sea, the sand and the sun!
