Joychandi Pahar is a hill which is a popular tourist attraction in the Indian state of West Bengal in Purulia district. The Bengali film directed by Satyajit Ray, Hirak Rajar Deshe was mostly shot in this mountain area.

HOW TO REACH

By Rail: Joychandi Pahar(JOC). Frequent express and local trains halts here due to Asansol-Adra section of South Eastern Railway. Ii took 43min to reach there from my place.

By Road: 50km from Asansol.

It was a weekend gateway trip for me away from daily chores of life on a Sunday. I boarded morning train and reached JOC at 9:43am. I hired a Auto(Rs 250/-) to reach base point of Joychandi Hill which took 10-15min from station.

Note:Do not forget to save Auto driver number as there will be no transport for return.

One need to climb up approx 500 stairs to reach hilltop of Joychandi hill to have mesmerising view of Purulia landscape and to see blessings of Maa Joychandi. It takes hardly 15min to reach hilltop with normal pace and taking rests in between.

Semaphore Tower

Semaphore Tower(not a watch tower) built by British East India company, used as medium to send information or news before invention of telegram. It was an intermediate tower for transmitting information from Calcutta fort William to Chunar fort, Varanasi. The book The Worldwide History of Telecommunications (2003) by Anton A Huurdeman notes that there were 45 Semaphore towers on the Calcutta- Chunar line. It is hard to say how many still exists.
