Sorry for the really bad pun. Couldn't help it . But Vagamon is truly 'Wow'gamon!
It is a less explored hill station from the South. Vagamon is located in Idukki district of Kerala state. Roads are good if you go via Kochi. You can also drive via Munnar. Vagamon is a wonderful place to get away from the city madness.
We halted at Idukki and decided to drive to Vagamon the next morning. Road is not very good from Idukki to Vagamon and also google map is really confused about the route. It took us a while to reach Vagamon. The really long drive was bearable because of the breathtaking views en route. As you near Vagamon climate is extremely good . Even for a Diwali weekend the place was less crowded and chaos free. That is what we crave for,don't we ?
We stayed in a wonderful place that is located up above in the clouds. Given the altitude,drive is little tricky to reach this place. But its so worth it. We were famished by the time we reached here and we had lip smacking Kerala meals ready. Easily one of the best meals I have had so far. Feels like home food .
Our only agenda for the day was to eat sleep and repeat. Weather was totally in favor for this plan. Sunset views from our balcony was gorgeous.
For the next day we did not have any plans. I had not researched anything about the place (which is very unlike me ). The hotel manager gave us two plans . One was to visit the popular tourist spots around that was listed in the pamphlet. And the other plan was they will arrange a jeep early in the morning to watch sunrise from a view point and a visit to hidden waterfalls. Ofcourse we chose the second plan.
We left very early in the morning when it was still dark outside. The jeep ride itself was an experience all together . It was so bumpy throughout . Reminded me of the Kodachadri ride. So after this crazy ride we reached this point and the sun was playing hide and seek . There was absolutely no one around . After clicking some pics and filling our lungs with fresh oxygen we left from there . A brief stop midway for chai and we were off to the waterfall . Nature at its purest form. All I could hear was birds chirping and the water flowing. Even as I write this it all comes back to me. What a wonderful feeling!
Our driver said he will take us to place from where we can get a good view of Idukki dam. One more bump ride and we reached the base. The driver stayed back and we went on the hike . It was a short one . I cannot describe the view around. 360 deg it was only mountains and Idukki reservoir at a distance. There was absolutely no human in near sight. Now if ask me direction to these places or google maps location , sorry I have no idea. But I understand most of the hotels in Vagamon can arrange you a jeep ride and I guess you can ask your drivers for such places if offbeat is your thing.
After this eventful morning we returned back to the hotel for a scrumptious breakfast and to chill for rest of the day. Saved visiting tourist spots for the next time. Vagamon is one of the very few places in South India that is not yet hit by the tourism wave. I also believe it is gonna stay like this for a while.
