While we strive to remind and educate one another about the importance of preserving our environment, it is disheartening to witness the negligence of basic responsibility by some individuals. It may seem audacious for me to voice this concern, but I have faith that not all of you contribute to the littering of our surroundings. Personally, I take pride in carrying my own trash in my bag when a trash can is not readily available.
The situation worsens when thousands of people gather in one place, especially during a holy visit. It is truly shocking to observe the extent of littering that occurred in Haridwar during the Kanwar Yatra.
40 million Shiva devotees visited the holy city of Haridwar this season!
Recently, the holy city of Haridwar witnessed a massive influx of 40 million Shiva devotees during the annual Kanwar Yatra. Unfortunately, amidst the spiritual fervor, the importance of keeping the sacred place clean seemed to be forgotten.
Every corner that the pilgrim tourists visited, from the revered Ganga ghats to the bustling markets, roads, and parking lots, were left littered with garbage. The sheer extent of this littering became evident over the 42-kilometer stretch from Har-ki-Pauri, where piles of garbage accumulated.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the authorities worked tirelessly to clear approximately 30,000 tonnes of garbage that had accumulated in Haridwar, Uttarakhand.
Round the clock cleaning of Ganga Ghats:
Municipal town commissioner Dayanand Saraswati said the cleaning of the garbage and waste began on Saturday. “Round-the-clock cleaning of the Ganga ghats, roads, bridges, parking lots, and a temporary bus stand is being carried out. We have increased the number of workers to 600 for the time-bound cleaning. We have also started spraying insecticides and fogging in the mela area,” said Saraswati.
The seven day rainy spell slowed the garbage disposal!
During the Kanwar Yatra, a seven-day period of continuous rainfall posed challenges in garbage collection and disposal. To address this issue, the Haridwar Municipal Corporation has deployed an additional 40 garbage ferrying vehicles, bringing the total number to 140.
While we all aspire for the Ganga river to regain its pristine state, it is disheartening to witness individuals conveniently neglecting their responsibility to keep it clean. We would love to hear your thoughts on this recent development. Share your opinions in the comments below.
