How many of you have taken a trip to Rishikesh ONLY to push through the treacherous rapids of the Ganges? I am sure there will be many. And this makes for the majority of crowd that Rishikesh attracts every year during the season of white-water river rafting.

But lo and behold, the Uttarakhand Tourism Department Board (UTDB) recently announced that white water river rafting will be opened on the Bhagirathi River in Harsil Valley, near Uttarkashi too. The valley that was so far known for its Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage and stunning trekking routes, will now be known for another activity that is adored by all adventure enthusiasts.

If reports are to be believed, this initiative will be a part of the Vibrant Village scheme under which UTDB has identified three rafting destinations that would include the stretch between Jangla & Jhala bridges on Bhagirathi.

Minister of Tourism Satpal Maharaj added in his announcement that both pilgrims and adventure seekers will be able to experience the thrill of river rafting on Bhagirathi River near Harsil which will not only offer an exciting activity but also open new avenues to generate tourism-related employment for local youth.

Additional Chief Executive Officer of UTDB further added that introducing river rafting in this area will be a significant milestone for Uttarakhand’s tourism industry as this will provide a unique opportunity to boost local tourism and enhance the experience of visitors.

Considering the conditions of river rafting between Jangla and Jhala bridges are perfect for river rafting and reaching Harsil by road, which is located 30kms from the town of Uttarkashi is relatively easy – it is believed by the authorities that this offbeat activity will gain a lot of traction and lead to a competitive rafting industry in the Harsil valley.

Since this activity needs supervision and necessary oversight and this place will be new and unchartered territory, UTDB has implemented mandatory registration for companies who will be carrying out this extreme sport.

Being a person who loves to head to river rafting expeditions, I am looking forward to the initiation of these unconventional rafting routes.
