We're well aware that Uttarakhand is a land blessed with charming hillside towns, picturesque mountain-view homestays, and the serene tranquility that provides a much-needed escape from our daily lives. If you've had the pleasure of exploring Uttarakhand before, odds are you've also had the opportunity to visit Lansdowne. And if you haven't had the chance to experience this stunning hill town yet, there's a possibility that when you do, Lansdowne's name might have undergone some changes.

In April of this year, the Lansdowne Cantonment Board initiated a proposal to rename the town. The board's intent is to bestow a new name upon this hill town in tribute to Rifleman Jaswant Singh, a revered hero of the 1962 India-China war.

Idea rejected by stakeholders:

While the proposal expresses support for the idea of a name change, it appears that the stakeholders are not in favor of this notion. These stakeholders encompass business firms, social and political organizations, as well as hoteliers, all of whom collectively rebuffed the idea. To be honest, speaking as a traveler, I too hold a deep affection for the original name. Some old names have a special place in your heart.

Impact on tourism industry:

As a fellow traveler, I personally find the old name more relatable and charming. The concerns raised by the stakeholders about the potential impact on tourism in the area are indeed valid.

Furthermore, members of civil society have expressed that they have no objection to honoring Rawat. However, they emphasize that the city's priority should be the provision of basic facilities. We all understand the crucial importance of having essential amenities, especially when traveling.

In light of these considerations, it's essential to strike a balance between preserving the heritage and identity of Lansdowne and addressing the pressing needs of the local community and travelers.
