Located at an elevation of 3,717m in the Garhwal Himalayas, is a treacherous yet a magnificent trek called Khatling Glacier Trek. The glacier is the source of Bhilangna River and is surrounded by the four Himalayan peaks namely - Jogin Group, Barte Kauter, Kirti Stambh, and Sphetic Pristwar.
The Khatling Glacier Trek is a 12-13 days trek (return) famous for an unfiltered view of glaciers formed on the flanks of the towering peaks in the Uttarakhand Himalayas.
Where is it
The trek starts from the Ghattu village which is located at 62kms from Tehri a tiny city in Uttarakhand. You can reach Ghattu via Tehri from Dehra Dun or Rishikesh. On reaching Ghattu you can accommodate in tourist guest house. However, en route, there are other important places like Reeh, Gangi, Kalyani & Bhomakgufa, where tourist guest houses are available. Since Gangi is the last village on this trek route, no accommodations are available beyond this tiny village.
Difficulty Level
The range of this trek is from easy to difficult. Initially, it's an easy approach till you reach the grandeur of the meadows in Chowki, after passing through hamlets like Kharsoli & Kalyani. It's a difficult trek after Chowki as the route reaches a high altitude zone. The terrain gets tougher as you progress towards your final destination. You are greeted by a terrain dominated by boulders and thin ice which make the condition tricky.
DIY or not
Since the trek gets difficult after a certain patch, having a knowledgeable guide by your side is advisable, along with the right gears.

When to do it
The ideal months for the trek are - May, June, September, and October.
The Route
The actual trek starts from Ghattu village which is reachable via Tehri. It'a 4-5 hours trek to Reeh which is the 2nd village on the trek route and your destination for the night. The next morning you leave for Gangi which is 6-7 hours trek through the dense forest and occasional ascends and descends. Your next stays will be at Kalyani followed by Kharsoli.

Trekkers have an option to go ahead and catch the breathtaking view of Masar Tal which is a 3 hours trek from Chowki (3 hours from Khatling)
Itinerary
Tehri - Ghattu (6-7 hours)
Your organisers will pick you up from Tehri for your journey towards Ghattu. After the long drive which is full of picturesque locations, you will arrive at your base village. You can take a tour of the village upon reaching provided you get enough rest for the next day.
Duration - 7 hours
Altitude - 1798 meters
Ghattu - Reeh (6 hours)
The next morning you start your journey towards Reeh which is 10 km from Ghattu. Reeh, a green hamlet in the laps of the Himalayas will be your abode for the night.
Duration: 5 hours
Altitude: 2,051 metres
Reeh - Gangi (6 hours)
An overnight stay at Reeh is enough for you to rejuvenate and prepare for the daunting journey ahead. With occasional ascends and descends through forests and occasional openings, you reach Gangi.Duration: 6 hours

Gangi - Kalyani
A yet another long trek through the forests with a difficult terrain takes you to Kalyani which is the 2nd last stop before the Khatling Glacier Camp.
Duration: 6 hours
Altitude: 2,625 metres
Kalyani - Kharsoli
The Bhilangana river flows below, as the trail takes you through the dense forest while slowly ascending to Kharsoli - a large opening in the middle of the forest.
You will be accommodated in your tents for the night.
Duration: 5 hours
Altitude: 2,876 metres
Kharsoli - Khatling Glacier
After a picturesque trek you reach your campsite on the Khatling Glacier. You cross a couple of landslide-prone areas on your way to the campsite. However, once you reach atop, you are greeted by the grandeur of Thalaysagar. You finally set out to experience the magnificence of the glacier in the most unfiltered way!
What to pack
Since the trek is demanding, it's advisable to have the right gear. Trekking shoes, sunglasses, gloves, fleece, hiking jacket, and self-heating warmers.
