We all know how COVID-19 has hit the tourism industry. Consequently, the state governments are trying different ways to promote tourism – the state of Uttarakhand is the recent one to take a step in the direction. In a recent move, the tourism department has selected 29 remote villages in the hilly regions of Uttarakhand to be developed as hiking destinations!
According reports, the decision was taken to promote the "Trekking Traction Center Homestay Scheme". It will not only boost tourism but will also provide jobs for the locals in the hilly areas. The media also reported the ministry as saying, “Through this promotion the government is trying to empower the local people, so the rural economy can become more powerful. It will also reduce the migration and will make people self sufficient.”
What's in it for trekking enthusiasts?
"The state government has already selected eight beneficiaries from Agora and Dasna villages in Uttarkashi district which fall on the Dodital trek route."
The scheme starts from Chopta village near Tungnath shrine, the world's highest temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Some of the selected villages are Uttarkashi, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh districts. The best part about this decision is that the local people with trekking potential will be trained, and travellers will find comfortable accommodation options along remote trek routes. The upcoming homestays are said to be decorated in a traditional way to retain the charm of Uttarakhand's mountain homes.
Other details
Financial help of Rs 60,000 is offered to build each room and also an additional amount of Rs 25,000 for constructing new toilets is allocated. This will be done by the committee head, and after the final evaluation, the amount will be transferred to the beneficiary’s bank account.
