Exploring the Majestic Chandrashila Peak in Uttarakhand
Introduction
Welcome to this blog post where I will take you on a virtual journey to the famous Chandrashila Peak in Uttarakhand. This peak not only offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain ranges but is also home to the world's highest Shiva temple, Tungnath. Join Me as I explore this incredible trek and discover the beauty of this region.
The Journey Begins
My trek starts in Rishikesh, a popular starting point for adventures in Uttarakhand. From Rishikesh, I make My way to Chopta, which is approximately 200 km away and takes around 6 to 7 hours to reach. Along the way, I pass by the confluence of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers at Devprayag, where I recommend making a stop at the famous Dhari Devi Temple.
It's important to note that when using Google Maps to navigate to Chopta, make sure to search for Tungnath instead. There is another village named Chopta, and selecting the wrong one might lead you on the wrong route. So, always input Tungnath to ensure you are on the right track.
Continuing our journey, reach Rudraprayag, the confluence of the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers. Here, leave the Rishikesh-Badrinath Highway and move towards Kedarnath Road along the Mandakini River. As I travel deeper into the mountains, the views become even more enchanting.
Passing through Agustmuni, I catch My first glimpse of the majestic Kedar dome, part of the same mountain range as Kedarnath. There are two roads ahead, one leading to Kedarnath via Guptkashi, and the other to Ukhimath, which I follow. Ukhimath is where the winter rituals of Kedarnath worship are performed, adding to the spiritual significance of the area.
Arriving at Chopta
After a long journey, finally arrive at Chopta. The campsite is located in a picturesque location surrounded by snow-capped peaks. The views from here are absolutely stunning, with a 360° panorama of the surrounding mountains. However, it's important to note that there may be some network issues in the area, so it's best to coordinate with the camp staff for directions and other information.
As the sun sets and darkness falls, the campsite becomes even more magical. Unfortunately, due to the lack of light, unable to capture the beauty of the surroundings on camera.
The Trek to Chandrashila
With the break of dawn, gear up for the trek to Chandrashila. The starting point of the trek is about 5 km from the campsite, and as I make my way towards Chopta, find ourselves surrounded by a snow-covered landscape. It truly feels like driving through heaven.
Upon reaching the trek's starting point, notice a signboard indicating that Chandrashila's height is 3680m. It's already 8:35 AM, and aim to reach the summit by noon. The entire trail is covered in snow, and equip Myself with microspikes to ensure a steady and safe hike. While Chandrashila is considered an easy-grade trek, it's important to be physically fit, especially as I climb beyond 10,000 feet.
As I trek further, I am greeted with breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and lush meadows. Chopta, also known as bugyal, offers a mesmerizing display of natural beauty. The trek to Tungnath, which is about halfway to Chandrashila, is relatively easy and perfect for first-time trekkers looking to explore the winter landscape. However, it's essential to have the right gear, such as microspikes, to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
The higher I climb, the more challenging the trek becomes. The trail becomes steeper, and the snow grows deeper. It's crucial to stay motivated and determined to reach the summit. Along the way, encounter the magnificent Tungnath Temple, the highest Shiva temple in the world. Its peaceful energy and stunning architecture leave me in awe.
Continuing ascent, I come across a signboard indicating that Chandrashila is a steep 1 km climb from Tungnath. The view from this point is both exhilarating and frightening, with the path winding in a Z shape and trekkers perched on the edge. While this section of the trek can be challenging, the reward is well worth it.
Finally, reach the summit of Chandrashila. A temple stands proudly, offering a place for reflection and taking in the awe-inspiring 360° view of the surrounding peaks. From the Garhwal Himalayas to Nanda Devi and beyond, the panorama is a sight to behold. If you're seeking a trek that offers a multitude of peaks in all their glory, Chandrashila is the place to be.
I hope you've enjoyed exploring the magnificent Chandrashila Peak with me. This trek is a testament to the beauty and grandeur of Uttarakhand's mountains. From the serene Tungnath Temple to the breathtaking views from Chandrashila, this adventure offers a unique experience for both seasoned trekkers and beginners.
If you're looking to embark on a winter trek that showcases the splendor of the Himalayas, Chandrashila should be at the top of your list. Just remember to pack the necessary gear, stay motivated, and immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring surroundings. Until next time, take care and happy trekking!
