Besides Snow, There’s Another Reason To Visit Uttarakhand This Winter

Uttarakhand, currently, is home to more than 500 types of butterflies and the state tourism department is taking steps to ensure that we can observe and enjoy them. To attract visitors, two butterfly parks have been opened, one in Dehradun at Lachhiwala in Garhwal region and another in Nainital at Botanical Garden in Kumaon. A new field guide to the state’s vast array of butterflies has just been published as well. As part of researching the book, dozens of butterflies previously unrecorded in Uttarakhand for decades were also rediscovered.

There is something surreal about butterflies. They defy what we associate with the word 'insect', their wings are some of the most colourful proofs of nature's creativity and the joy in watching them flutter by immense. These tiny creatures hold the power of bringing a smile to almost everyone's faces! Covered almost two-thirds with forest, apart from butterflies, Uttarakhand is also home to some diverse fauna, including tigers, leopards, Himalayan gaur, and 710 of India's 1,263 bird species.

There is also a butterfly museum in Sat Tal, near Bhimtal that's home to over 2,500 species of butterflies. There are also another 1,100 species of insects indigenous to Uttarakhand. The museum is located in the premises of Sattal Methodist Ashram. The museum is open on all days of the week from 10am to 5pm.
