Naimisharanya Tirtha Naming
Naimisharanya is made up of two words, Naimish + Aranya, the word Naimish means blinking, moment or clock, and Aranya means forest, forest. The stories of the naming of Naimisharanya shrine are found in different Puranas. Some of the main stories are as follows.
According to Shiv Purana
According to Shiva Purana - once the gods realized that humans are not getting salvation on earth, humans keep on taking various measures to get salvation, yet they are not getting salvation. Due to this, all the gods got worried and went to Brahma ji, the creator of the universe. All the deities pleaded with folded hands and said to Brahma ji that now you yourself tell me a way so that human beings can get salvation while living on earth. Hearing this request of the deities, Brahma ji said to the deities that if you want to save human beings, then you should do penance of Lord Shiva for 1000 years.
When the penance starts ending, then I will send the wind god to you people, who will tell you the ways for the salvation of human beings. The gods told Brahma ji that you have told the way to do penance, but did not tell at which place this penance should be done if you can be successful. On hearing this request of the deities, Brahma ji created a chakra, leaving that chakra in remembrance of Lord Shiva and said to the deities that the nemi (axis) of this wheel will slide and the wheel will stop, you people do penance at the same place. Will do it All the deities followed the wheel and followed the wheel and that wheel of Brahma ji stopped in a picturesque forest while circumambulating the three worlds. The forest in which the axis of the wheel got washed away, and the wheel came to a standstill. The name of the forest was called Naimisranaya. Where the gods did penance for Lord Shiva for a thousand years.
In the last ghani of penance, the wind god came and told the deities that due to the merit of all of you austerity, this Naimishsaranay has become so holy and full of supernatural powers, that whoever visits this holy place, he will get freedom easily. .
According to Shiv Purana, this place was named Naimisharanya because of the nemesis of the chakra left by Brahma ji.
According to Devi Bhagwat
According to Devi Bhagwat, scholars have told in this way that the sages living on earth came to know that Kalikal is going to last and this Kalikaal is hallucinatory and destructive, so they got frightened and they also started to fear that Kalikal In this, the demonic forces will start creating more disturbances due to which they will not be able to perform their yagya etc.
To avoid the wrath of Kalikal, all the gods prayed to Brahma. He told Brahma ji that you should tell us such a place where Yagya etc. can be done smoothly at the time of Kalikal. Hearing the prayers of the sages, Brahma ji created a chakra and Bamha ji said that I am leaving this chakra, the place where its nemi (axis) gets washed away and stays, that will be the place for you people to perform yagya etc.
There will be no effect of Kalikal at that place and you will be able to carry out your work smoothly. Saying this, Brahma ji left the wheel and all the sages followed that wheel, that wheel roaming in all the lokas and stopped in a dense forest.
According to Varaha Purana
According to this Purana, a different story is found in the nomination, which is as follows, in ancient times there was a demon named Durjaya, he was very powerful and tyrannical. He did not allow the sages to perform the yajna, and disturbed their penance, he and his followers used to contaminate the place of the yagya.
Due to the atrocities of Durjaya, not only the sages but also the deities were stricken, then all the gods and sages went to Lord Vishnu and prayed to get freedom from the tyranny of Durjaya. Lord Vishnu started his Sudarsan Chakra after listening to the prayers of the sages. By then Durjay had also come to know that all the gods and sages have gone to the shelter of Lord Vishnu.
Then fearing this, he hid in a dense forest with all his army, he thought that in this way we would be saved, but it was his mistake, it was not possible to escape from the Sudarsan Chakra of Lord Vishnu. Sudarsan Chakra killed Durjaya and his entire army in a blink of an eye.
