The US State Department has an advisory issued for all countries in Asia. The agency has put these countries in four different categories to warn tourists against any precautions that need to be taken.

Mostly Malaysia is low risk but the eastern area of Sabah State are an exception with threats of kidnapping for ransom. People at coastal resorts, island resorts, and boats ferrying between islands are targeted by criminal and terrorist groups.

Afghanistan has been designated Afghanistan at highest advisory level due to crime, unrest, terrorism, kidnapping, and armed conflict. As per the agency, all of Afghanistan is unsafe as it witnesses hostage taking, landmines, suicide bombings, widespread military operations, and terrorist attacks.
Iran poses risk of armed conflict, terrorism, crime, or being kidnapped, arrested, and detained. Students, journalists, business travellers, and academics have all been arrested by Iran authorities on charges including espionage and national security threats.
Iraq witnesses terrorism, kidnapping, and armed conflicts which puts it on high risk. There are numerous terrorist and active insurgent groups that attack civilians.
The US State Department warns that Americans need special validation to travel to North Korea and warns that there is a high risk of arrest and long-term detention.
