Alaska

If your first thought about an Alaskan cruise is “won’t it be cold?”, keep reading as we have some sweltering suggestions for you. In the meantime, let us introduce you to the stunning vistas and unadulterated terrain of beautiful Alaska. Watch as you glide past glaciers and gasp at the wildlife that roams freely, before jumping off your cruise ship for a day of dog sledding and whale watching. Quite honestly, it’s one of the coolest places on earth and we don't just mean in terms of temperature.

Galapagos Islands

Keen photographers won’t want to overlook the majesty of the Galapagos Islands when planning a cruise holiday. As well as impressive landscapes to enjoy, there are many endemic species to snap too, including the infamous giant tortoises of the area. In the waters, you’ll find sea lions to swim with and a state-of-the-art exploration mega-yacht that offers to showcase the indigenous flora and fauna of the island. This is definitely an option for active travellers who like to take home a lot of magical and once in a lifetime memories.

Canada

Oh Canada! As pretty and welcoming as you’d expect it to be, though the sights as you sail your way through the water are stunning, it’s the on-shore opportunities that will really excite you here. That’s not to say that you won’t be desperately trying to take as many pictures of Perce Rock as you pass through Gaspé though. Head towards Newfoundland and you’ll be able to see swathes of puffins and maybe whales too before moving round to Charlottetown; one of Canada’s most popular tourist spots thanks to its quaint charm and friendly locals. Many Canada cruises also take you to New England, giving you a chance to experience the best of the northeast coast of the United States. From the seaside towns of Canada to the friendly ambience of Boston, there’s a lot to enjoy.

Papua New Guinea

Found in the Pacific Islands, this is your dream destination if you love sun, sand and water that looks like glass, but it isn’t merely a beach-lovers paradise, as there is a lot of history and culture to soak up here. Known by many as ‘paradise on Australia’s doorstep’, Papua New Guinea combines all the luxury of a tropical cruise with adventure as you delve into the volcanic terrain and swim with the local sea life. Remote, unspoilt and with so many activities to revel in, this is a cruise destination for the whole family to enjoy, so why not leave the teenagers snorkelling in Simpson Harbour, while you explore the Japanese WWII tunnels? You can all come together for dinner and share your day over some fresh seafood and sea views as the sun sets.

Tasmania

While we are in the area, we can’t not mention fabulous Tasmania. A beautiful island off the east coast of Australia, it has the sea coursing through not only its landscapes but also its heritage. Port Arthur is one of the best spots for learning about the maritime history of the island, but not every day has to be a school day. Food is a huge focus in Tasmania, which means it’s perfect for visiting foodie and wine connoisseurs who are keen to taste locally-made delicacies from the infamous Salamanca Markets. There are also gorgeous gardens, line-fresh seafood treats and domestic craft ales to enjoy.

Japan

A bucket list entry for almost every keen traveller that isn’t from the region, Japan might not immediately spring to mind in terms of cruising. However, when you consider that it’s an island, it does actually make sense to approach via a luxury water carrier! Breathtaking in so many ways, from the incredible commercial landscapes of major cities such as Tokyo to the direct contrast of seemingly unspoilt areas such as Shimizu, Japan is a country with many faces. Ishigaki is a favourite destination for native Japanese holidaymakers and it boasts unadulterated beaches, forests and food to die for.

When you think of cruise holidays, there are no doubt some fairly standard destinations that pop into your head and though they are wonderful, it never hurts to think a bit outside the box. After all, it’s the paths less travelled that make for the most unforgettable adventures.
