History of Saheliyon Ki Bari

Saheliyon Ki Bari Udaipur has a fascinating history that dates back to the 18th century. It was built by Maharana Sangram Singh II, also known as Rana Sanga, who ruled the Mewar kingdom from 1710 to 1734. He was one of the most powerful and respected rulers of Rajasthan, who fought against the Mughals and expanded his territory.

He was also a loving husband who wanted to please his queen. According to legend, he met his queen when he was on a hunting expedition. He saw her bathing in a lake with her friends and fell in love with her at first sight. He asked for her hand in marriage and she agreed on one condition: she would bring along her 48 maidens who were her childhood friends.

The king agreed and built a special garden for them on the banks of Fateh Sagar Lake. He designed the garden himself and made sure it had everything they could wish for: fountains, pools, pavilions, statues, flowers, trees, etc. He also imported rain fountains from England to create an illusion of rain for them. He wanted them to enjoy their time away from the political intrigues of the court and have fun like they used to.

The garden became their favorite spot and they spent many hours there. They played games, sang songs, danced, read books, etc. They also celebrated festivals and occasions there. The king often joined them and entertained them with his stories and jokes. The garden became a symbol of their friendship and love.

Saheliyon Ki Bari Reviews

There wasn't any concrete plan for this day. We visited Saheliyon Ki Bari,we got done in 20 minutes, as it's a small place. While we were talking to our Ola auto guy, he told us about this museum that was about Maharana Pratap Singh, we were definitely not keen, but we just gave it a shot as we weren't planning for anything else. And this museum is so engaging, it took us a whole of 3 hrs to complete. After a quick lunch we walked around the Hatipole marketand Mochi bazaar. Ive been crazy about visiting market lanes. They give you the gist of the people, their produce, the food, inobedient traffic skills, their clothing, every single thing. We spent a nearly 2 hours just walking around, before we headed to Gangore Ghat for sunset. Udaipur has alot to offer to artists btw, miniature paintings in just one thing, it has grafitti walls, artists stalls, artist communities, art studios, contemporary art, modern art. All of it.
We rang up the auto guy by noon and started the city tour. The first on list was a boat ride on the lake. After the ride, we skipped a few small attractions on the way and stopped at Saheliyon ki Bari. As per history, this garden was designed by the king himself and he presented this garden to his queen. The Queen was accompanied by 48 maids in her marriage. This patterned garden used to be the popular relaxing spot of the royal ladies. The queen with her maids and female companions used to come here to spend their time in leisure. It will take only 10 minutes to cover this spot.
Flowers in full bloom, cool fountains and artistic architecture- this beautiful Badi is a perfect escape from the scorching desert sun. The garden is famous for its lush green lawns, marble art and fountains. English translation of Saheliyon Ki Bari means "Garden of maids". This renowned garden is located on the banks of Fateh Sagar Lake, presenting a green retreat in the dry lands of Rajasthan. It was built in the 18th century by Maharana Sangram Singh for the royal women. Today, the crystalloid fountains, lotus pool, marbled elephants sprinkling water and many more attractions have made the garden a must visit for Udaipur explorers.
Saheliyon ki badi (Courtyard of the maidens). King Sangram Singh had built this enthralling garden in 1710. This garden was laid out for their leisure time. King Sangram and Princess Shankuntala came here to spend there weekends. It has 48 women attendants who came as part of a princess’s dowry and has beautiful, well-maintained fountains, kiosks, marble elephants and a delightful lotus pool. Saheliyon Ki Badi is one of the most beautiful gardens and a major tourist destination in Udaipur. It is the garden of maids.
Since I didn't know anything about the place so I asked the hotel owner for the tourists spots. He was very gentle. He made a list of places on a paper and numbered them so I could follow it like a map. All places are within 5-6kms. I first visited Saheliyon ki Bari (Bari means garden). A beautiful lush green garden with Lotus pool and elephant fountains at the centre. It was built by the then King for his Queen.
