The airport region in Mumbai has a beautiful drive with lush greenery and palm trees growing on either side of the roadway. Mumbai does know how to make a statement to the visitors. Fitting in perfectly with the vibe of the Arabian sea, which is situated right by the coastline, the palm trees make for a suited gateway into the city.

All around the airport, there are many hotels which catch the fancy of visitors. With immense pop in colour and distinction in design. Located right near the Airport, Waterstones hotel is an oasis in Mumbai city. It is a boutique hotel which is designed by Ms. Rachna Narang, an architect who is born and bought up in Mumbai but is now working on projects in Scotland.

The natural way of living...

All the properties designed by Ms. Rachna Narang have immense individuality and display an appreciation for the natural way of living. All 4 floors in the hotel with rooms have a distinct theme: Mountain, Glacier, Fire and Marine. As soon as I entered the reception area, I knew the hotel surpassed my expectations. With a unique and offbeat colour theme, the sofas were blue, the curtains were white, and there was a lot of natural sunlight coming in. The table in the lobby was glassy with starfishes and sand inside the compartment. I instantly felt like I was a part of a marine region. Even the furniture here, was shaped like corals and sea weeds. The intricacy in design was very impressive, and the lobby had a human touch.

Both the owners, Ms. Rachna Narang & Mr. Sanjay Narang grew up in Mussoorie amongst nature. Their way of life reflects boldly in their choice of interiors. It is unique to see such design in the heart of Mumbai where most hotels follow a theme which suits the elegant, sometimes pretentious business class. However, Waterstones Hotel makes no attempt to transform itself to fit into the city, and that is exactly what makes it stand out.

The reception area also had "The pastry shop" which has many desserts. The area is well designed in color blue and looks like a cute London cafe. "The corner shop" is another interesting area in the lobby. It has many Indian handicrafts, earrings, necklaces, books & other interesting products. Offbeat again in its approach, you will not find products that are easily available in the city. It is a very well curated corner and depicts the intricacy in thought which goes into curation at the property.

There is also a region with tiny sunflowers in the middle of the lobby. This works well in contrast with the shades of blue and white used in the area. A new dimension is added to the property by the staircase design, lush green in colour which almost looks like natural grass is growing on the staircase.

To add to this, there was an outdoor area in the lobby level which made me feel teleported to Bali. Lush greenery captured both the sides, with outdoor furniture, seating area and tables. I fancied a couple of margaritas while I gazed at the bright blue sky, while I sunbathed on the lush greenery.

Rooms at Waterstones Hotel

Being on level 6, my room was "glacier" themed. Decorated in colour blue, there were blue glass tiles used for flooring which made it seem like I had entered an Igloo. I later learned that the glass flooring keeps the room colder and is better suited for those who want to turn off the AC but still enjoy the cold.

There was a huge painting of snow covered mountains on the wall which caught my eye. The lighting in the room was sober but not too bright. The room felt like a beautiful, cozy igloo which was all mine for the weekend.

The bed overlooked the airport and a lot of greenery. Nothing made me happier than sleeping to the bright lights in the city which I could view from my room, and watch a sunrise over around 2,000 trees located in the area, which I could spectate from the room.

My beachy vibe

There was a glass panel filled with snowballs in the room which looked like it was snowing in the room. Overall, I forgot my Mumbai life when I stayed in the room, right in the heart of the city. The change in atmosphere from my routine life was stunning and mesmerising. The feeling of waking up to 2,000 trees in Mumbai city is not very common but is cherished deeply.

I read my Bhagvad Gita in peace in the room and relaxed at the hotel. I did not feel the need to leave the space even once. The natural splendour at the hotel, with some fancy tan, and a few margaritas was all I needed.
