As soon as you step in Udaipur, you fall in love with the city such is its charm and beauty. The beautiful lakes in this white city are a treat to the eyes. And yes the forts, the architecture, it does nothing but amazes you with its beauty. I got a wonderful opportunity to explore the city for 30 odd days and there is little I missed. This was my first time in Rajasthan and Udaipur lived up to all the expectations I had from the city. Here i present you the 10 best places to visit in Udaipur.
Gangaur Ghat
This was undoubtedly my favourite place in Udaipur. The peace and the serenity of this ghat knew no bounds. The soulful music of the ravan-hatta, the pigeons and the clear water makes this place an unmissable thing in Udaipur. The best time to visit this ghat is in the evening around Sunset. The thing you would love doing in this ghat is sitting on the banks with your feet in the water and listening to the background music. You don't need your earphones here.
Opposite to Gangaur ghat on the other side of Lake Pichola, it is a ghat with a great view of the city palace. I realised the importance of this ghat in the last 10 days of my trip. I had been to this ghat a lot of times in the morning when I used to conduct city walks but the true beauty of this ghat is realised in the evening after the sunset when you just sit there looking at the palace and its reflection in the lake. You can also see the Taj lake Palace and The Leela Palace from this ghat. Have a coffee at Ambrai restaurant and enjoy the complete view of the ghat.
Jagdish Temple
On the way to City Palace, Jadgish temple is an ancient architectural marvel in the middle of the city. It has beautifully carved pillars, decorated ceilings and painted walls. Go at the time of aarti, relax and feel the positive vibes this temple has to offer. If you want to just see the temple, it should not take more than 20 minutes.
City Palace
Situated on the banks of Lake Pichola, this is the most famous tourist attraction of Udaipur and you will find it on every top 10 places list but believe me Udaipur has a lot more to offer than City Palace. But since you are in Udaipur you can't miss City Palace.I went with a group of 5 to the palace and did a guide as well. The guide took Rs. 450 ( because we asked him to explain in English ) for the tour and the entry to the palace was Rs 300. It took around 2 hours to cover the palace, clicking pictures and listening to stories by our guide. City Palace also offers boat ride at lake Pichola and takes you to the Jagmandir as well. If you are on a budget trip and want to save some money I would recommend to skip boating here and do it as Dudh Talai instead.
Bagore ki Haveli
Just beside the Gangaur Ghat is Bagore ki Haveli. Known for its splendid architecture and skillful craftsmanship, the Haveli has been converted into a museum now. The museum is open till 5:30 pm and the entry ticket is also nominal. The best thing in the haveli is the folk dance and puppet show which is held every evening from 7 PM to 8 PM. I won't divulge a lot about the show, because it is something you should see and not read about. The only thing I will say is that the show will leave you completely mesmerised. This is another unmissable thing in Udaipur and easily makes to my list of 10 best places.
Fateh Sagar Lake
Believe it or not, it is an artificial lake like most of the other lakes of Udaipur. There is Nehru Garden in the middle of the lake which you can reach on a boat. Motorboat rides are also available here. There are a lot of small restaurants near the lake serving you Pav Bhaji, Chinese food. I had expected them to serve something Rajasthani, but then I realised Fateh Sagar Lake was more of a local tourist location. Don't miss the Kulhad Chai here.
Monsoon Palace
Also known as Sajjangarh fort, it is a stunning palace situated on the Aravalli hilltop. You can take your vehicle to the top and there is a jeep facility as well which takes you to the top and brings you back. The best thing to do at Monsoon Palace is watch the sunset and get a glimpse of the White City from the top. I consider myself lucky enough to witness that.
Karni Mata Temple
The temple is located on a hilltop, you can either climb around 500 stairs ( I counted ) or take a ropeway. The temple offers you a great view of the city from the top. Never really got a chance to go inside the temple but went there twice to witness the most peaceful sunrise i had ever seen.
Neemach Mata Temple
Located on a hill on the banks of Fateh Sagar lake, you have no option but to climb ( around 900 metres ) all the way up to the temple. The temple offers you a great view of Fateh Sagar Lake. You can also see lake pichola from here.
Badi Lake
Now this is one of the less explored places in Udaipur. I used to take people for a trek on tiger hill ( bahubali hill ) situated near the lake. Go in the evening, trek at the mountain, enjoy the sunset and the view but be sure to leave the place after the sunset because it gets too dark and is not completely safe. The most amazing thing is that this is also an artificial lake.
Now there are a lot of places i have not included but these are the 10 places to visit in Udaipur for me. You can comment below the places you think are worth visiting. For tourism related questions, like the timings, the entry tickets, etc. you can visit Udaipur Tourism.
