Rajasthan has got a very rich culture and history. It is the Land of kings or Land of kingdoms in true sense. Temples, fort, Palaces, lakes, Hill stations and most importantly, Desert is what attracts tourist from all parts of world to this state. You might have perception that Rajasthan is all desert, but its a misconception. There are places where water is scarce but then there is Udaipur, city of lakes ! Each city has its own charisma and gives you an ever lasting experience. I have listed the best Road trips I had in Rajasthan (Trips will start from Udaipur, as it was my base location and city with best highways around).
Must Read: Road trip from India
It is 160 km trip from Udaipur via NH 76 through Pindwara and Abu road . The highway is one of the best maintained in country I would say and smooth and fast to ride on. I even managed to touch 137 km/h on my R 15. (Whoa! is it ;)) There are two tunnels on the way which have been built by cutting hard solid rock. Mount Abu hosts beautiful Nakki lake, Historical Dilwara temples, Achalgarh. Also, it is the only hill station in Rajasthan. Guru shikhar being the highest point at an altitude of roughly 5600 ft. Other attraction is sunset point and Toad Rock. If you plan to travel by Rail than Abu road is the nearest station (30 km from Mt Abu). It will take 2-3 days to completely explore the beauty of this place, and it is advisable to visit during Oct-March.
Jodhpur is around 300 km from Udaipur and can be reached via Ranakpur or Desuri ki naal. Road through the Ranakpur forest is more picturesque. Camels are a normal sight on the way but if you are lucky you might spot a leopard or bear too. (I was lucky enough :)). Both roads have curves and you need to ride very carefully, especially considering the Rajasthan roadways bus drivers: P Though ranakpur road is in better condition, Desuri-ki-naal road has been built recently and looks good for riding. There are lot of places in Jodhpur to visit like Mehrangarh fort, Ummed bhavan palace, local markets and cuisines.
Jodhpur to Jaisalmer is another 300 km ride and it takes around 5-6 hr to reach via NH 15. There is alternate route via NH 114 but NH 15 is better and in good condition. Jaisalmer is known as Golden city because of the golden sand and palace it hosts. Here on the way you will get the feel of Desert and Rajasthan, with sand dunes on both sides at some stretches. This trip is advisable only in winters (Oct-March) else you will burn your ass off: PThe main attraction of Jaisalmer is sand dunes which is around 40 km from Jaisalmer city. During the tourist season you could find tents for night stay in desert with some folk dance and music. Other than that there is small pond in city, which can also be visited.
Udaipur to Jaipur is 412 KM on NH 79/NH 8. There is an alternate route via NH 8 through Rajsamand. NH 8 is a busy 6 lane highway which is also a part of golden quadrilateral. Both the routes are in good condition and pleasure to ride on! However NH 8 is more tricky and curvy, whereas NH 79 via Bhilwara is in better shape but a little longer than NH 8. Stop at Pushkar, which is 20 km from the city of Ajmer. Pushkar is a holy place for Hindus and hosts one of the rarest Brahma temples in the world. Take a Dip in Pushkar lake, spent an evening at the lake side and shopping in the local market. Also visit Ajmer Sharif (dargah), which is again a place people visit, from all corners of the country. There are lot of Dhabas on the way, which serves good and spicy north Indian food to satisfy your taste buds.
Jaipur to Delhi - NH 8 connects the capital of Rajasthan to national capital. It is a 270 Km stretch and one of the most well maintained and busiest national highway. Everyone knows about Jaipur, the pink city, so I shall not be talking about it much ;)
This is another stretch of NH 76 which connects Rajasthan to MP and UP via Kota, Shivpuri , and Jhansi. Udaipur to Chittorgarh is approx 120 Km and can be reached in less than 2 hours. The road is well maintained and in good condition. There are some good spots for break and photography in this stretch as well, as Aravalli extends to the outskirts of Udaipur. Chittorgarh has a very rich history from Rajputana dynasty. The fort is the largest in India and holds a very special place in hearts of Rajputs. The warrior King of Mewar, Maharana Pratap took an oath to spend his life living in the jungles and fighting until he could realize his dream of reconquering Chittorgarh from Akbar (and thus reclaiming the glory of Mewar). It has also been a land of worship for Meera. And don't forget to stop at SHARMA's restaurant on the way to have scrumptious desi ghee Dal Baati and Churma.
Kumbhalgarh is the birth place of Maharana Pratap. Kumbalgarh is situated 82 km northwest of Udaipur by road. It is the most important fort in Mewar after Chittaurgarh and also a world heritage site. Road is single lane via Nathdwara. The place can be reached via NH 76 till Gogunda and again single lane road. The great battle between Rana pratap and Akbar was fought at the Ground of Haldighati which is a place near Gogunda The Kumbhalgarh fort has perimeter walls that extend 36 kilometers, it is the second longest wall in the world. The frontal walls are fifteen feet thick. Kumbhalgarh has seven fortified gateways. There are over 360 temples within the fort, 300 ancient Jain and the rest Hindu. From the palace top, it is possible to see kilometres into the Aravalli Range. The sand dunes of the Thar Desert can also be seen from the fort walls.
