You don't visit a small town in the suburbs of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and expect to find the best Asian cuisine you have ever tried there. It does sound impossible. How can a restaurant in a small town like Bheemili be better than Asian cuisine restaurants in Mumbai? Well, you need to go there to find out. I recently went to Bheemili that is a one-hour drive away from the Port city of Visakhapatnam. The drive was scenic with a constant view of the Bay of Bengal crashing the shore and with greenery around. I was going to Novotel Bheemili Resort for a staycation. Teppanyaki is a Japanese restaurant located at the rooftop of Novotel Bheemili Resort. It is an experiential dining restaurant that I am so happy to have found. It changed the way I learned to see restaurants in small towns.

While walking into Teppanyaki, I noticed the beautiful infinity pool at Novotel Bheemili Resort which opens up to an expansive view of The Bay of Bengal. The beauty of the infinity pool reminded me of a feeling of infinity in my life and made me feel more open hearted. I couldn't wait to experience the dinner experience Teppanyaki because it was located at the most beautiful infinite spot in Bheemili.

When you walk into Teppanyaki at Novotel Bheemili Resort, you feel like you have walked into a portal to Japan. With a beautifully lit Teppan at the centre of the dining area, and chairs around the Teppan that face the chef when they are preparing food live, Teppanyaki is an immersive, joyful and introspective experience for a food lover. I was impressed to learn that the chef at Teppanyaki had been trained by a well known chef from Japan who had visited Bheemli for 2 months to train the staff at Novotel Bheemili Resort. All the dishes at Teppanyaki are prepared live for the diners on the Teppan counter.

I tried Horenso Gomae, which is made of spinach with sesame seeds in sweet soya sauce. It tasted heavenly and I felt a burst of flavours in my mouth.

The Miso Soup was light in texture with some fabulous thin and soft rice noodles in the bowl. Spring onions that were added to the miso soup only added to the flavour more intensely.

I also tried Okonomiyaki, which is basically Teppan prepared Japanese pizza. It had a drizzle of cream cheese, bell peppers and spring onions on top. The Okonomiyaki was prepared in front of me from pouring the batter on the Teppan counter to letting it settle for crispiness. This was my favourite dish at the restaurant.

Sushi is one of my all time favourites and I loved how the chef incorporated my niche preferences while making the sushi. He used avocados, cream cheese and tempuras in my sushi.

Dumplings were served to me with sweet chilli sauce and schezwan sauce. The cabbage, carrot and onion filling in the dumplings was phenomenal.

After eating so much for dinner, I could not even think of trying out their other options. I was a vegetarian and was seated on the live veg counter. A couple really wanted to try the vegetarian Teppanyaki experience but had not booked the experience in advance. After seeing how much I was enjoying the food, they too decided to give the experience a shot the next day. I enjoyed a glass of a cocktail with my dinner and couldn't wait for dessert.

For dessert, I had fried ice cream that the chef fried on the live Teppan counter right in front of me. Watching the ice cream sizzle made me crave it even more.

As per Japanese eating rituals, after every meal you should enjoy a cup of green tea to digest your food better. The chef served me freshly made green tea so that I could digest the food and sleep better. Luckily, I was staying at Novotel Bheemili Resort and could go back to my room and relax after the meal.

Overall, the food at Teppanyaki was much better than I had tried even in Bombay or Delhi. It was also fairly priced for the overall experience. It is a must try for everyone. If you are in Visakhapatnam, then an hour's drive to Bheemli is worth it to experience the some of the best Asian food in the country. You need to try it to believe it. It's definitely not worth missing out on.
