The Tabo Monastery will welcome you in its old and new forms. Beautiful, as all places in Spiti are, the old monastery was founded some 1000 years ago at an altitude of 10,000 feet.
We were amazed to find the statue of Ganesha right at the entrance of the monastery, symbolised as the Protector & Destroyer of Obstacles.
With faded but beautiful paintings depicting the journey of how Buddha discovered enlightenment, the monastery is sure to take your breath away as the monks try their best to protect and preserve the paintings - which easily qualify as a National Treasure!
Photography inside the premises is prohibited. The monks ensure no artificial light should enter the premises, even the window & celing glasses have been stroked with paints to restrict the sunlight from falling on the artwork, inscribed a thousand years ago!
