Summer vacations are often visualised with a beach view and martini in hand. But if you are not the beach kind, then there are treks waiting for your footsteps to mark them forever.

Forget air conditioning, and make the best of summers with cold Himalayan winds. Here are some of our favourites.

Beginning from Munsiyari in Pithoragarh of Uttarakhand, the trek begins with a 10 km stretch to Martoli Thatch. Next day is 6.5 km to Roddkhan, followed by a five hour ascend to Tanti. After one more day of trekking, you reach the Munsiyari base camp. The route is beautifully decorated with rhododendron and pine trees, making for a great scenic trek.

Starting from Panthwari via Mussoorie–Kempty falls near Dehradun, the trek is a five km stretch to Camp at Tibba. Next day, two hour descend to Panthwari. The route is more like a hike and makes for an easy getaway.

Starting from Baggi via Mandi, the trek is a 7.5 km stretch to Camp at Parashar Lake. Next day 2 hour descend back to Baggi. The route is makes for a scenic hike to a beautifully located lake.

Starting from Barsu via Haridwar, the trek begins with a five hour stretch to Dayara Bugyal. Next day is five hour to Bakaria, followed by exploration of the Bugyal. After one more day of trekking, you reach back to Barsu. The Dayara meadows are considered one of the most beautiful in Uttrakhand and is a sure treat to the senses.

Starting from Lohajung via Kathgodam, the trek begins with a six km stretch to Bekaltal. Next day is seven km to Brahmatal, followed by five hours next day to Brahmatal Peak. After one day of descend, you get back to Lohajung.

Starting from Jawara via Manali, the trek begins with a pleasant stretch to Balu ka Gera. Next day is ascend to Shea Goru via Hampta Pass, followed by descend next day to Chhatru. You can even take a jeep from Chhatru to witness the majestic Chandrataal and then head back to Manali.

Starting from Govindghat near Haridwar, the trek begins with a 13 km stretch to Ghangria. Next day is 10 km to Valley of Flowers and back. Followed by descend to Ghangria. The trek also passes through the holy Hemkund Sahib.

Starting from Katrain near Kasol, the trek begins with a five kilometre stretch to Yogso. Next day is eight km to Behali via Malana village. Another day of trekking Nagroni followed by the climb to Nauya Tapru via Chanderkhani Pass. Descend to Rumsu Village.

Difficulty: Moderate

Starting from Jaubhari, the trek begins with a 11 km stretch to Tonglu. Next day is 13 km to Kalipokhri via Singalila National Park. Another day of trekking leads to Sandakphu followed by a day a long day (20 km) climb to Phalut. Descend to Gorkhey.

Starting from Aru via Srinagar, the trek begins with a 10 km stretch to Lidderwat. Next day is six km to Shekwas via Singalila National Park. Another day of trekking leads to Tarsar followed by five kilometres climb to Marsar. Descend down to Sonamasti.

Difficulty: Moderate

Starting from Taluka via Sankri, the trek begins with a 8 km stretch to Puaani Garaat. Next day is seven km to Kalkatiyadhar via Osla Village. Another day of trekking leads to Har Ki D00n followed by descend to Puaani Garaat.

Starting from Sonamarg via Srinagar, the trek begins with a 9 km stretch to Nichnai. Next day is 12 km to Vishnusar Lake then five more hours to Gadsar via Kishansar lake and Gadsar Pass. Next day to Satsar. Another day of trekking leads to Gangabal twin lakes. Followed by 11 km descend to Naranag.

Days: Eight

Difficulty: Challenging

Starting from Daula via Dehradun, the trek begins with a stretch to Sewa. Next day is climb to Jhaka then to Saruwas thatch. Next day to Dhanderas thatch and Ronti Gadh bia Rupin Pass. Another day of trekking leads to Sangla.

Starting from Lohajung via Kathgodam, the trek begins with a stretch to Ghaeroli Pata. Next day is climb to Bedni Bugyal then to Patar Nachauni. Next day to Bhagwabhasa and later to Roopkund Lake. Another day of descend leads to Patar Nachauni.

Days: Seven

Starting from Yuksom via Bagdogra, the trek begins with a 5.5 hour stretch to Bhakim. Next day is four hours to Tshokha, followed by Dzongri in six hours next day. Another day of trekking leads to Thansing followed by two hour climb to Lamuney and then off to Goecha La. Descend down to Tshokha and Yuksom.

Starting from Dhak Village via Joshimath, the trek begins with a seven km stretch to Gulling. Next day is six km to Khullara. Another day of trekking leads to Pangarchulla Peak Summit and descent to Khullara camp followed by a descend to Auli via Tali camp & Gorsen Bughyal.
