Sri Lanka, a small country on the south of India is truly a gem of the Indian Ocean. A country totally off from the travelers' eyes has just started to gather tourists after the internal political war finished in 2008.
I took an Air India flight form Delhi to Colombo direct and set out on an eight days expedition to explore the unexplored Lanka - the land of Jewels, Lions, Jews and more.
Colombo is a crazy place. Period. Much similar to Delhi, India but definitely a cleaner city. I stayed there for a day just and took a local train to Kandy, central highlands.
KANDY - I loved this place. Refreshing air, happy people, amazing chilly food and deep history. 2 days are enough to explore Kandy, did Elephant Safari, saw cultural dance show and the famous Sacred Temple of Tooth.
From Kandy, we took a special AC train to Ella, tea plantation hub of Sri Lanka. The 4-hour journey in itself is truly amazing. Look at a view in the picture below.
Ella- is a small place in the central province of Sri Lanka. Filled with tea plantations. All of your olfactory receptors open up to the maximum and you be like, Yes! This is what I wanted to smell for-ever. We did an Ella Rock trek which is like 5 hours from the city bus stop. The trek is medium level and can be done with little difficulty.
From Ella we hopped-on to a 6 hour bus journey to Unawatuna, beach area in the Southern Province in Lanka. Unawatuna is a chilled out party place, a relaxing spot for people and to indulge in water sports such as scuba diving, snorkeling and more.
After a 2-day relax and chill, we headed to Galle, an hour away from Unawatuna. Galle is of much historic significance with the Galle fort and clock tower built by French in some 1600's.
Galle marked the end of our Sri Lanka backpacking trip. From Galle, we took a local train to colombo and then after 6 hours waiting at Colombo airport, back to Delhi, India via Air India.
