History

Sinhagad fort had been the place of many battles. Marathas fought many battles from the year 1640 to the early 1700s to be in command of this fort. Notably, the action of Sinhagad in 1670 is very famous. Did you know that this fort tactically built to give natural protection because of its vertical slopes? Yes, that is true, and if we mention its well-known battle, it happened during the night time on 4th February 1640. More to the point, this war fought between Tanaji Malusare, a military leader of Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Udaybhan Rathod, fort-keeper under Jai Singh a Mughal Army chief. At the end of the war, Tanaji Malusare became the victor and handed over the control of this fort to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Mughals suffered heavy causality, and few from Maratha side and after the battle, Mughal troops, were locked up by the Marathas. Tanaji Malusare was gravely hurt and died in the hands of Udaybhan Rathod. Upon learning the passing of Tanaji Malusare, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was struck with sadness and displayed his grief by famously speaking, "Gad ala, pan sinha gela" , "Fort captured, but the lion is lost." A movie made in Hindi, Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior to be released on 10th January 2020 based on the life of Tanaji Malusare.
