The landlocked Himalayan state, is all set to get its first railway station after a long wait of 49 years, marking a significant milestone in the region's development. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Rangpo station on Monday as part of the 550 Amrit Bharat stations nationwide.

Key Details of the Project

- The project involves 14 tunnels and 22 bridges and has faced several challenges due to the rugged terrain, environmental issues, and natural calamities. According to officials, the project is likely to be completed by 2025.

- The Sivok-Rangpo railway project is one of the ambitious projects of the Indian Railways in the Northeast, along with the Bhalukpong-Tenga-Tawang railway line in Arunachal Pradesh.

- The cost of the Sivok-Rangpo railway project is estimated to be around Rs 8,500 crore, making it one of India's most expensive railway projects.

- The railway line will also connect Sikkim with the rest of India through the broad gauge network, enabling faster and smoother movement of passengers and goods.

- The route will cover Sivok, Reang, Teesta Bazaar, Melli and Rangpo stations on the way.

Stretching nearly 45 km from West Bengal's Sivok to Sikkim's Rangpo, the railway line will have five stations. Notably, Teesta Bazar could be India's maiden underground halt station as per reports.
