Off the Beaten Track Attractions in Kalutara District – An Explorer’s Haven

Tripoto

Sri Lanka is best-loved for its spectacular beaches and incredible wildlife sighting opportunities. However, recent years have brought the lesser-known attractions in Kalutara District to the spotlight.

Fa Hien Cave

Named after a Buddhist monk who lived in it for some time, Fa Hien Cave makes for an ideal day trip while you’re holidaying at one of the hotels in Kalutara. The caves are located on elevated land, which treats visitors to an exciting trek along with spectacular views.

Nachchimale

Nachchimale is a famous Buddhist hermitage where many monks indulge in meditation. Only those who are interested in meditation and immersing in serene environs should come here as the monks here are quite serious about meditation and would feel quite offended if you cause disturbances in any way.

South Bolgoda Lake

Water sports are quite the hit at South Bolgoda Lake, so you’d have plenty of opportunities to enjoy a fun-filled day here. It is the largest natural freshwater lake in the country and is spread out on a massive area of 350 square kilometres in both Colombo and Kalutara districts.

Madu River

If you’re a nature enthusiast, a river safari in Madu Ganga would let you feel at one with nature. As you glide along the lake, listen to the calming splashes of the paddles on the water and the soothing calls of various birds and animals, most of which would be pointed out by your guide.
