As someone who has always loved trying new dishes, one of my favourite task is to scan all popular places with a squinted eye to look for the best things to eat. And if you are headed to Lonavala from Mumbai, fret not, because I have you sorted with some incredible options.
Here are all the things you must check out on your travails to Lonavala.
1. Rama Krishna
Where: Old Mumbai Pune Highway, Lonavala
An iconic place for breakfast or just a meeting point with friends, this landmark cafe is a place that warrants a stop from everyone. So whether you are visiting Lonavala or driving through Mumbai-Pune highway, this is your place to stretch your legs and eat at least one serving portion of idli sambar from the restaurant. In fact, for the past 26 years, come rain or shine this Shetty run establishment serves more than 500 plates of idlis that are drowned in sambar and chutney for a mere price of 55. If that is not value for money, what is?
Also contrary to popular belief, this restaurant also serves meat {try their butter chicken}, besides also having a well-stocked domestic bar.
2. Rudra
If you are having a tough time convincing your friends or family to leave the house, your best bet would be to offer to take them to Kailash Parbat for a plate of chole bhature. We promise that soon you will be seated in front of two greasy, globe sized bhaturas along with a bowl of spicy curried chickpeas. Although a popular dish of North India, this dish has a number of fans in the country simply because this cafe ensures that this is one meal that will keep you coming back for more.
Perched between the Deccan Plateau and the lush Konkan belt of Maharashtra, there are a number of canteens and rest homes. And while the options are endless for you, we have picked Kapol Niwas and Narayani Dham are two of our favourites. But the one place that unanimously wins our vote is Maneklal that is located a bit of the beaten track and has the same cook making home made food for more than 18 years. At a price range of INR 140-175, you can get a piping hot meal that is balanced in terms of spice and taste, while at the same time transporting you back to your childhood years.
Speaking of childhood nostalgia, no trip in the 80s were complete without shopping at Bakerally & Sons, along with a treat of ice cream and coffee at Pragati. If you are near this store on a cool evening, get ready to be assaulted by the seductive aroma of freshly brewed coffee, coupled with the smell of chocolate powder. For a period of 31 years. Pragati has successfully reduced both children and adults to silly smiles with their magical drinks, especially with their cold coffee.
5. Maganlal & Sons
For almost all of Lonavala, sweets, peda, ladoo and chiki means Maganlal & Sons. One of the city’s oldest and most cherished sweetmeat shop, the chikki in this shop dates back to almost 135 years. The secret to their prosperity? A protein packed portable snack that can be taken along anywhere you want. Take the effort and go buy from the original store {you will find it with the blue signage on the Bazaar road} rather than the normal ones that litter the highway.
Where to stay: V Resorts Lonavala is located in a peaceful yet posh neighbourhood, that is barely one kilometre away from the Mumbai Pune Expressway. So whether you want to visit the nearby wax museums or just appreciate the rich beauty of the nearby locales, or just take a dip in the resort's pool, there is something here for everyone.
How to reach Lonavala: The nearest airport to Lonavala is the Lohegaon Airport, Pune {1 hours and 32 minutes away}. You can take a bus or taxi from the airport. Alternatively you can also take a bus from major cities in Mumbai that will drop you directly at Lonavala.
