Bangalore has another historical marvel “Lepakshi” just at about 120 km (2 hours drive) in Lepakshi district near Anantpur of Andhra Pradesh. The word “Lepakshi” refers/translates to “Jatayu” (a mythological bird in Ramayana who lost his life in the hands of Ravana when attempting to save Sita when Ravana had kidnapped her) in Telugu.

This lesser known destination near Bangalore is a must visit for those interested in history, culture, heritage and architecture. It’s a temple of lord Veerabhadra (a fierce incarnation of Lord Shiva) built in 16th century by Vijayanagara Kings.

This temple is also famous for its Hanging Pillar which is an engineering wonder (this pillar, one of the 70 stoned pillars supporting the temple roof and its Gopuram does not rest on ground and visitors can themselves experiment to witness it by passing a piece of newspaper or cloth in the gap between the pillar and its base.

This legend can also be supported by a giant foot mark at the temple which is believed to be of Sita. Built in the typical Vijayanagara style of architecture, the temple features many beautifully designed carvings on each pillar of gods, goddesses and dancers.

It is a sprawling temple and known for the largest monolith of Nandi and also the Nagalinga. The huge statue of Nandi is carved out of a single stone which is believed to be the largest in the world (4.5 meters in height and 8.23 meters in length) and its located near the entrance of village facing the temple. It is one of those rare sculptures which we get to see, the dignity of nandi is indeed a delight to see.

So Bangaloreans can plan a daylong visit to this place to rejuvenate themselves from the chaotic city life.
