Do you know we have one of the ancient forts of India in Himachal Pradesh? Have you ever considered travelling to Himachal Pradesh for history? Well, I haven't until I visited Kangra fort. So if you like to explore ancient places and indulge in history, then here is one of the best-kept secrets of Himachal Pradesh.
Located on the outskirts of Kangra, about 20 kilometres away from Dharamshala, Kangra Fort is India's oldest dated fort, said to be built around 3500 years ago. This picturesque fort is a historical landmark in Himachal. Once well of treasures, Kangra fort was looted by many enemies from Muhammad Bin Tughlaq to the Britishers, but its final defeat was to nature.
The history behind the oldest Fort of India
The history of the fort dates back to the 4th century BC. People believe that Maharaja Susharma Chandra from the Katoch Dynasty, which traces its origins to the ancient Trigarta Kingdom, mentioned in the Mahabharata epic, had built Kangra Fort. From Mahmud Ghazni to Mughal Emperor Jahangir, many prominent rulers strived possession of the fort. Jahangir acquired the Kangra fort in 1621 after a 14-month siege.
In older times, it was said: "He who holds the Kangra fort, holds the hills."
However, in 1789, Katoch King Maharaja Sansar Chand II reclaimed his ancestral fort from the Mughals. He fought against Gurkhas and Maharaja Ranjit Singh to keep ownership of the Kangra fort. After he died in 1828, Ranjit Singh annexed the fort. The British eventually took over the Kangra fort after the First Anglo-Sikh War. In 1905, the Kangra valley earthquake damaged the fort severely.
The secret treasure wells
It is said that rulers of Hind used to send jewels, gold and silver to the fort to be offered to the presiding divinity at the temples and therefore, wealth started accumulating at the fort. It is believed that the fort has 21 treasure wells. The ruler of Ghazni and Britishers succeeded to loot 8 and 5 wells, respectively, during the 1890s. It is said that the fort still preserves 8 more wells full of treasures that are yet to be unearthed.
Apart from history, Kangra Fort is also known for its architecture
The fort is spread expansively in 4 kilometres and guarded by ramparts and high walls. Built strategically at the confluence of Majhi and Banganga river, this fort stands on a steep rock overlooking the surrounding valley. There are three temples within the fort walls, namely the Lakshmi Narayan Temple, Shitlamata Temple, and Ambika Devi Temple. The entrance to the fort is built with stone carvings and is known as Ranjit Singh Gate. There are many doors, such as Ahani Darwaza, Amiri Darwaza, and Jehangiri Darwaza. The arches, the passageways, the ruins of the castle, the watchtower and the temples make it an architectural marvel.
Once you pass the Ahani and Amiri Darwaza, a long passageway will take you to the top of the fort. There is a staircase between Ambika Devi and Shitlamata temple that will take you to the Sheesh Mahal, where a polygonal watchtower will offer breathtaking views.
