Hills have always been special to me, as I have spent my 10 years of childhood in hills. Hills also become special when you stay in a metropolitan city surrounded by noise and air pollution always. I wanted to end 2019 with the hills , specially my childhood place- NORTH BENGAL.
We started our journey from Siliguri on Saturday morning around 7:30 am. We had already booked a cab , which picked us from our place. Going through the Sevoke road, forest on both sides of the road, seeing the Coronation Bridge (Sevoke Bridge), proceeding towards our target of the day - KALINGPONG. The orange sellers sitting by the side come from the hills of Darjeeling. We enterered Kalingpong area around 9:30 am. The town welcomes with beautiful flowers all around. We visited the "Pine view Nursery " firstly. the place a cactus nursery along with that it acts a view point from where you can see Kanchenjunga range. The day was bit cloudy but we were lucky that we could get the view for some minutes. the place was equally beautiful, having a cafeteria with soothing music .
Main attraction for Kalingpong was Paragliding . We went straight to the place where paragliding was done. It costs 3000 rs for 10-15 min, and 5000 rs for 30-45 minutes, additional 500 rs for video . I was taken to a hill top from we will be flying high in the air. the experience was beyond explanation. You can see the tip of the tall trees, the whole kalingpong town was below me, the darjeeling hill was near me , I was feeling if i could land directly in Darjeeling. Thinking all these, I didn't realise when the time was over, and we landed on a ground.
after flying it was food time, momo and soupy noodles were my choice. For me if I come without eating momo from north bengal, it would have a been a big sin. After that we visited the delo park. the park gives you a picnic spot , plus view of kanchenjunga straight, and view of teesta river below.
then we went to science city, they have well utilised the hills for making the science park . the view was extraordinary. Kids will enjoy the place. Then moving forward we moved towards Lava. the total trip was all about views - flowers, trees, locals. That is what hills is all about after all. reaching Lava, we went to a monastery. sitting there for some time and we were frozen, it was so cold up there. the chilly wind from snow capped mountains were playing with us.
as we had to return back to Siliguri, and it was going to be dark soon, we could not go to our next destination. while returning to siliguri, we visited the GAJOLDOBA TEESTA BARRAGE. As it was dark, you cant see the barrage nicely, but the market which was sitting there was really very cheap. I had fried prawns only at rs 10. it was unbelievable and super tasty also.
Next day we left for Kurseong - the place where i lived at a age of 3 years. I had so many blurred images , which i wanted to relive. we went in govt bus to Kurseong. One can also go in jeep. the roads of kurseong are very steep and form loops. One has to be expert in driving for going there. Reaching the world heritage site - Darjeeling Railway - Kurseong station gives you goosebumps. then we moved towards the Dowhill, initially I started by foot but then I got exhausted and ended up getting up in a shared van.the van will take you till victoria school, then you continue to walk in the forest of dowhill. There are many spooky stories of Dowhill, that nobody can stay there after dark, ghosts have been felt there. After hearing these stories, my interest towards this place increased many folds. walking up to the hills, through the dense forest was a different experience. I took some packed food from Siliguri and this was a perfect location for the breakfast. sitting on the hill top eating food and the sun plays peek-a-boo with you through the trees.
we went down back to the market from where we started by foot. then we proceeded towards the place where I lived during my childhood. the tea garden, the eagle park, the building where i lived has changed a lot but still the blurred images became live. It was a extraordinary feeling.
We ended our nostalgic trip with momo and returned to Siliguri with lots of stories to share with all.
