Nepal, home to the mighty Mt. Everest, the tallest mountain in the world, has been popular amongst several mountaineers. It is home to expert mountaineers called Sherpas who are known to help other climbers reach the top. But this time, it was these Sherpas who broke all records by scaling the K2 summit, the world's second tallest peak in winter!
In a powerful video, watch as these climbers from Nepal take their final steps together to Summit K2.
About K2
Standing at the height of 8611 meters, it is the second tallest peak in the world. Also known as savage mountain, the formidable mountain is known for its horrendous weather conditions, with temperature dipping as low as minus 65 degrees Celsius, hurricanes and avalanches. It is located on the border between the Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan region and China. All the successful summits have been done in warmers months until now.
The journey to the top!
According to media report, on 16 January at 1656 hours, 10 Nepali mountaineers did what has been said impossible — ascending the K2 in winter. Nimsdai Purja, known for smashing the speed record for summiting the world’s 14 highest peaks in 6 months, was a part of this achievement. He shared the video of the group taking their final steps singing their national anthem boosting their spirit.
The mission was planned by Seven Summit Trek company last summer for conquering the peak, and scaling the savage mountain became their mission. So in the winters, the highly motivated climbers garnered all their energy, with the zeal to achieve the impossible started their journey that created history.
Nirmal Purja told the media "We succeeded in our effort because we worked as a team.” On reaching their home country Nepal, the heroes were welcomed with traditional woollen hats and garlands with many supporters cheering them on.
The triumph is the perfect example of the strength of the team work. With unity and trust in others, any challenge can be overcome, even if it climbing the unclimbable K2 in winters!
