and wildlife.

Set in the central hilly region of Sri Lanka, Horton Plains is one of the least talked about national parks. Famous for its endless stretches of wild moor like grassland, rolling hills, excellent weather and endemic flora and fauna, Horton Plains makes an excellent day trip from Nuwara Eliya. Flowers dot the well kept sanctuary and sambhar deer, black lipped chameleons, purple face langurs etc are easily spotted.

Many endemic plants grow here and the hike goes meandering into grasslands, cloud forests, Baker Falls and beautiful alpine meadows.

The area is home to three of Sri Lanka's main rivers and many streams reflect endless open sky in patches. The World's End is spectacular and on clear days, the strip of blue ocean is visible from the altitude. An important birding area, the protected area is surrounded by hills which are dotted with tea plantations, diary farms and wind mills.

A beautiful area for bird watchers, nature lovers and hikers, Horton Plains had been the highlight of my Sri Lanka trip. Most tour agencies in Nuwara Eliya offer day trips to Horton Plains and packed lunches are a good idea. It is an easy hike, mostly flat and can be done by everybody. An hour's drive from Nuwara Eliya takes you to the gates of Horton Plains and most excursions include the entrance fee.
