Hallstatt is a small town situated on the banks of lake Hallstatt in the Alpine region of upper Austria. Considered to be one of the most picturesque towns in Austria, it is known for the salt mines that are located in the mountains just above the town. These salt mine are about 7000 years old and are the oldest saltmines in all of Europe.
