Everything You Need to Know About Bhutan Permits

If you are traveling through Bagdogra you can obtain the permit from Bhutan Immigration Office at Phuentsholing. You can obtain the permit from Paro if you are flying directly.

In this post, I will be covering the complete process for the Bhutan entry permit and also include what you should know if you are traveling solo. I will be covering where you can get the permit for Dochula Pass and Punakha too.

It will take from 5 hours to 8 hours to reach Phuentsholling depend on your mode of travel from Bagdogra Airport.

The office opens at 9 AM every day. The Immigration office remains closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and Government holidays so make sure you plan accordingly.

Here are a few documents you should keep handy;

1. Photocopy of Passport or Election Card

2. 1 passport size photo

3. Immigration form

4. Itinerary on an A4 size page

5. Thimphu/Paro hotel bookings

You need either a passport or an election card. Aadhaar card and driving license are not valid. You will need a photocopy of your documents and keep originals with you as well. You can collect the immigration form from the nearby shops.

Usually, the officials don’t ask for your itinerary but you should keep it handy. You have to book your stays in advance and submit the printouts along with your application form.

Once you have all the documents required you reach the Immigration office at 8 AM or 8:30 AM. Trust me there will be a very long queue if you are late.

It took me 3-4 hours to get the permit. It completely depends on how busy the day is.

Note: You don’t need a permit to do sightseeing in Phuentsholing.

If you are traveling solo, you have to submit a written undertaking letter stating that you are traveling solo at your own risk and you have to mention some emergency contact numbers.

This permit is only valid for entry into Thimphu and Paro. If you wish to go to Punakha and Dochula Pass you have to obtain a special permit.

Once you reach Thimphu visit the Department of Immigration Office and get the permit for Dochula Pass and Punakha.

I obtained the permit through my hotel. When I went sightseeing in Thimphu my taxi driver submitted the documents and after 2 hours when we came back the permit was ready. You can do this on your own or you ask your hotel for the same. It usually takes 1 or 2 hours depends on how busy the day is.
