In a progressive move towards empowering women and enhancing their mobility, a scheme has been introduced by the Siddaramaiah government to allow women across the state to travel on public buses free of charge. This groundbreaking program aims to alleviate the financial burden on women and promote their independence and access to transportation.
The scheme does not include luxury buses such as Rajahansa, Non AC Sleeper, Vayuvajra, Airavata, Airavata Club Class, Airavata Gold Class, Ambari, Ambari Dream Class, Ambari Utsav, Fly Bus, and EV Power Plus.
As a key component of the initiative, 50% of the seating capacity on buses, with the exception of BMTC, AC, luxury, and inter-state buses, will be designated for men.
The 'Shakti' scheme extends its benefits to members of the transgender community as well. The government has announced that transgender individuals can avail themselves of the 'Shakti' smart card by applying online through the official website Sevesindhu.karnataka.gov.in. While the online application process will commence immediately, there is no official confirmation regarding the issuance date of these cards.
In the interim, women can make use of their official identity cards issued by either the Government of India or the Government of Karnataka, which feature a photograph and residential address, until they acquire the 'Shakti Smart Cards'.
