After creating ripples in the automobile industry with India’s first internet car, Morris Garages (MG) is back with an all-new conscious machine that exudes style and power. The British carmaker recently launched the MG ZS EV – its second car in India – at an event held in Delhi. Interestingly, the ZS EV is the first-of-its-kind in the Indian car market – a pure electric vehicle that comes with internet connectivity! So, the next time you set off on an urban adventure or plan a day trip with your friends, the only thing you need to worry about is who takes the driver’s seat.
Hello, MG ZS EV!
Backed by a 45kWh battery pack, the ZS EV is MG India’s first step into building a sustainable automotive ecosystem. The company claims that the car can cover a maximum of 340km on a single charge. Design wise, the ZS EV is a head-turner – chic, classy and straight out of the future. The compact SUV runs on an electric motor which allows it to zip from 0 to 100 kmph in just 8.5 seconds! As for the interiors, the ZS EV, with its leather finish and uncluttered feel, is bound to give its competitors a run for the money.
Our favourite feature, however, is the ‘sky roof’ which covers 90% of the roof and is exactly what you need for all the road trip feels. The company also revealed that it has tested the car for more than 1 lakh kilometers across terrains in India, which means, there shouldn’t be anything holding you back from planning an escape in the ZS EV already!
How do I charge my car?
Considering the fact that electric vehicles are still at a nascent stage in India, there are a lot of myths and concerns around the same. However, with the ZS EV, MG plans to build an ecosystem that will station electric vehicles as the new normal. Over the next 5 years, MG plans to have a charging facility every 5-km in major metro cities and every 25-km on national highways.
The company has rolled out as many as five charging solutions to ensure that charging the ZS EV is a hassle-free experience. Each car comes with an on-board charger while the company will also set up home and office chargers for its users. MG, in collaboration with the Indian Government, is also setting up a network of car chargers around the country. Additionally, ZS EV owners can also call for on-road charging assistance or plug into the ‘superfast’ chargers at MG dealerships which will give you an 80% charge in just 40 minutes!
What about the tech?
Ever since the launch of the Hector, MG has set a benchmark for the use of technology in cars and the ZS EV is no different! The car comes loaded with a bunch of features to ensure that you always cruise in style. The MG ZS EV gets what the company calls iSmart EV 2.0, an upgraded version of the Hector’s infotainment system that comes with an enabled SIM for internet connectivity. The car features an 8-inch screen that will assist you in navigation, music control and weather updates amongst other things.
Apart from the infotainment system, the MG car app also gets a major upgrade with the ZS EV. The app will now let users keep track of CO2 emissions saved from each driving session and also display charging related information. And if that wasn’t enough, the car also comes with an in-built PM 2.5 air purifier so that you always breathe clean on the road.
Life cycle of the ZS EV battery
MG has tied up with multiple companies to ensure optimum utilization and disposal of car batteries. Even though the ZS EV’s battery is built to last, the company has devised a unique ‘second life’ plan in case of a replacement. As a part of this programme, car batteries will be reused in domestic spaces, store solar energy and will eventually be recycled, instead of finding its way to a landfill.
How can I book the car?
To start with, MG will launch the car in five Indian cities – Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad. The company has started taking bookings and plans to roll out the car in January 2020.
