Cherapunjee is the name in my mind when I think of exploring raw nature. Cherapunjee or locally called Sohra is around 1.5 hrs away from capital city Shillong, titled as one of the wettest place of the world.
I along with my 5 crazy friends started from Shillong early in morning around 6 am, so that we can avoid shillong traffic, for that we even skipped our breakfast and had it only after reaching Cherapunjee. Prebooking of cab is necessary if you are leaving such early. We were totally satisfied with Orange Roots restaurant in cherapunjee which served yummy southindian dishes. That Cheese onion tomato uttappam & Ghee roasted plain dosa tasted like divinity. None of us ever imagined that we will get to eat such delicious south indian breakfast in this North Eastern state.
Post breakfast we headed straight to the top of Dainthlen Waterfall. The rhythm of the water falling from such height along with the sound coming from forest by various insects will make you love this place.
Spending half an hour over there, we headed to our next stop around 15 minutes travel from Dainthlen waterfall - the most beautiful place I saw till date - Wei Sawdong Waterfall. It's about 15-20min of tough trek 70 degree steep to reach at the bottom of the waterfall and big thanks to the locals who have built bamboo bridges to make your trek easier. People with no experience of trekking should think twice before going there. However they can go to the view point to see this place from a certain height.
The trekking is worth it when you see this beauty, the three step fall will make you wonder how beautiful nature can be. You can even climb up to the 1st step and do swimming in this crystal clear blue water. Several multicolour butterflies, various insects , beehives are quite a common sight there. Try to visit as early as possible in order to avoid the rush of the tourists. After spending quality time there we headed back and the upward trek is bit tough although we stopped at the view point to see this beauty one last last time from a distance and bid adieu with a tiring yet cheerful smile.
Next we headed straight to base point of Double Decker Root Bridge trek. Its around 1 hr journey from Wei Sawdong and we are all set to start our 6600 steps approx ( down and up) trek. It's an another experience ,going down was not that tough about 30 prcnt of the way we first headed to single root bridge. The beautiful bridge was made by the roots of the giant tree and locals did modify a bit so that tourist can stand and enjoy the wonder of nature. After that we moved forward for completing the double decker bridge but before that we had to cross the river twice but this time hanging bridge made of iron was there, where only 1 person can cross at a time. After 1:30 hr of walking non stop we reached to our destination the double decker bridge. Journey will exhaust your body so I will suggest to stay there at homestays near by to get relaxed and enjoy further but because of our tight schedule that was not an option for us. The living root bridges of a two huge trees stand on top of one another making it look way too amazing. The worst part is coming back , where you have to climb the stairs. There are plenty of small shops where you can buy water, food else this trek will make you dehydrated. After a tiring upward trek of 3 hrs, we finally reached on the basepoint. It was already 5:30 in the evening and the legs were paining as hell so we directly moved to our stay for night - NG ECO Homestay ( a budget homestay run by local people). The room was quite big and for dinner we had basic rice dal and mashed potatoes that our host prepared for us. Since all of us totally exhausted because of trek in no time everyone fell asleep.
The following day, we started visiting the view point of majestic 7 sister waterfall although clouds were playing hide and seek with us but still we managed to see a glance of it and it was very beautiful.
After that we moved to Mawsmai Cave, one of the most popular spot in Cherapunjee. This natural cave has beautiful formation of rocks and water droplets from the top makes it look fabulous.
Then we moved to the last point of our trip, view point of Nohkalikai Waterfall - Longest plunge waterfall of India and the view is breathtaking, with such beauty anyone can fall in love with this place.
There are so much places to visit in Cherapunjee like Garden of caves, Rainbow waterfall etc. but due to lack of time we couldn't go. Still we are so happy what we explored it even in little time and definitely wish to come here again to complete the remaining spots.
