Travelling to Tawang is not a cakewalk either, the roads test your patience, endurance and ability to travel on hilly roads but its worthy.

Tawang is a mountain town in Asia. India considers it to be part of the state of Arunachal Pradesh, while China claims it as part of South Tibet. It’s home to the 17th-century Tawang Monastery, a hilltop structure housing a massive gilded Buddha statue. The War Memorial commemorates soldiers who died in the 1962 Chinese-Indian War.

Welcome to Tawang- with mountains view

Day 1

Delhi to guwahati via flight early in the morning and then started our journey from airport.

Our journey began from Guwahati, the route is quite simple and yes, Tata Sumos rule these roads. So, put your backpack on the roof and hold your place tight, this journey is not for the faint hearted.

Took cab from airport to paltan bazaar in guwahati to enroute our journey.

Reached paltan bazaar and looked for traveller which took us to tezpur and temperature over their as like in delhi and we dropped our plan to stay in tezpur and again started our journey towards bomdila in sharing cab i.e tata sumo with local passengers and even that was fun with music and enjoyed and stopped over at Bhalukpong for vehicle entry, ILP check which we got through online in advance and then hit Bomdila at 8 after 6-7 hour journey ,looked for our stay and yeah weather is changed now its too cold in bomdila in night.. stayed in small place but to relaxed after dinner.

Day 2

Today’s morning was the time for the epic journey, Bomdila - Tawang stretch and at 8 we again started our journey this time booked personal taxi for taking halt and relaxing our eyes with beautiful view of mountains but Bumpy and treacherous, yet memorable and a lifetime sumo ride. It truly tests your patience, endurance and ability to gain and lose altitude at a short distance. And yeah momo and thupka are started in breakfast lunch and dinner. From Bomdila at 8500 feet to driving along the Dirang river and again gaining altitude to cross over Sela at 13,700 feet Reached sela pass at approx 1200 hrs and no words for this place.. A big gate with welcome to tawang and place welcomed us with cold breeze and we chilled almost for 2 hour on frozen lake.. yes you heared right frozen lake we walked,we sat, ran, drunk beer with magnetic view.. ahaann too cold to handle but mesmerising views made us to bear that chilling wind also..after spending memorable time at sela we started with more craziness bcoz mountains made us more crazy and energetic with their beauty.. frozen waterfalls, mountains, music, food and else what u need to spend a pleasant life. Also visited jung waterfall on the way to tawang.

Reached tawang approx at 8 p.m but looks like 12 in night..shops closed, empty roads and our driver guided us to choose the best place to spend our next 3 days i.e Mon valley which made our stay more comfortable than what we expected.. we cooked omelette in owner’s kitchen, they treated us like their relatives not only guest, best hospitality and everything and then had food and ended our day with star gazing.

Day 3

Morning in tawang- the land of rising sun, we tried to wake up early to witness the rising sun but tiredness didn’t allowed. But today we spent our day in local sightseeing visited budhha park, monastery, market, the town, walking up and down the narrow roads of this beautiful town asking directions from the lovely people and dropped the option of hiring taxi and in the evening War memorial in Tawang town is a must visit place, and you must witness the light and sound show (starts by 6 or 6.30) in the evening. It covers the stories of brave soldiers who gave a tough fight in the 1962 war. It would be of deep interest to people who find wars or history interesting and while returning from war memorial to our staying place we didn’t have any energy in our body nor any convenience to reach our hotel and then hope came towards us i.e sumo and we asked for lift and good hearted people allowed us to sit in their taxi without any charge.

Day 4

4th day was booked for Tawang - Bumla - Sangetsar Tso-P Tso: Reserved Sumo from travel costs around 5000 INR. including the permit to be issued and travel agency will do it for you and just keep few Identity card and ILP copies handy with you. It is best to get it done a day prior to your travel.

“The bunkers you see, right there, are the remains of 1962 war. The Chinese came invading the same road we are driving on”, says the Sumo driver while negotiating a sharp turn. Today is the day to reach at Bumla- Indosino border bcos of our indian army we are living our life happily and they are away from their family. Witnessed many lake’s in our journey and took halt at Y juntion canteen which is managed by our indian army. And yeah they served us delicious pakore, tea and momo and at reasonable price. Pristine lakes on the way and the exhilarating views take away your attention from the road conditions.

Bumla is your chance to get a peek into the life of our armed forces men under such treacherous and extreme geographical conditions, at an elevation of 15,200 feet where oxygen level depletes. Standing at the post you can gaze into the Chinese territory as the soldiers explain you the geography of the Line of Control. This is truly a lifetime experience.

Day 5

Last day in tawang was for to roam on street of the colourful tawang while watching the preparation of the people for their biggest festival “Losar” or The New Year festival, is the most important festival of Tawang District in Arunachal Pradesh. The Monpa Tribe celebrate this as the coming of a new year. Now it’s afternoon and weather is changing.. yeah finally for what we were waiting for long.. it started snowing.. and till mid night enjoyed snowfall from our balcony.

Day 6

Mountains view with snowcapped.. snow everywhere and sunrise... perfect moment it was.. we can’t capture in pics but only in our eyes... and its goodbye time to tawang until next time. Began our journey to tezpur on snowy roads, mountains view, rising sun, what else you need... but difficult to leave beautiful place..miss u tawang will meet u again soon.Bye bye to tawang and whole day journey till tezpur on bumpy roads really tired us. Reached at 9 p.m and looked for night stay near bus stand.
