My sister and I were recently on a road trip to the beautiful tribal belt of Himachal. From Delhi to Simla and onwards to Kalpa/Nako/Tabo & Kaza. While at Narkanda I discovered that there were some excellent home stays in Thanedar just a few kilometers away. On exploring the various options I zeroed in on Grandma Stokes Bed & Breakfast since I recalled that it was the great Dayanand Stokes who had originally started apple cultivation in Thanedar and this made me very keen to opt for Grandma Stokes.
The bungalow is extremely comfortable and really very tastefully designed and furnished and can easily compare with a star hotel.
It is managed by Vinay Sirkeck who is extremely hospitable as well as friendly, without being intrusive. He personally ensures you thoroughly enjoy your stay with him.
The food provided was tasty as well as wholesome and was all the more enjoyable because Vinay and his Uncle joined us for our meals as gracious hosts and regaled us with the history and other interesting details of this part of Himachal.
The bungalow is full of books of all genres since the family is full of voracious readers. Wi Fi is also available, but with so many other interesting things to do and see, we rarely used it!
Their Apple Orchard is a good place to see and learn about cultivation , sorting, packing etc. We got to taste some yummy apples too.
The views from the Dining Area are stunning. You can clearly see the Sutlej making its way down, The scope for photography is immense.
I shall certainly go back and stay for a longer spell as soon as I can.
I must reiterate that this was one of the finest home stays I have experienced and wish Vinay all the very best.
