The Alchi Monastery, an ancient monastery located in Alchi Village in Leh District, is known as the oldest monastic complex in Ladakh. These four villages with monuments predating different eras are known as the complex. Some of the earliest surviving paintings in Ladakh are found at Alchi Monastery.

Alchi is also a member of the “Alchi group of monuments” three settlements that make up the “Alchi grouping of monuments. The Mangyu and Sumda Chun are the other two settlements. Many people consider the three village monuments to be works of rare craftsmanship.

Alchi Monastery’s History

According to historical records, Rinchen Zangpo built Alchi Monastery in the 10th century. But it was also said to have been created by a Tibetan lord named Kal-dan Shes-rab, who was active around the 11th century.
