The sound of the frothy ocean, the view of the balmy coconut trees, and a panorama of the cool blue sea awash your senses at Agonda Beach.

If you wish to experience Goa less like a tourist and more like a local, then I'd suggest that you take a trip to Agonda -- a simple fishing village located in Canacona, South Goa.

The scenic, uncrowded beach at Agonda leaves you with a sense of tranquility and the luxurious feel of having a holiday on your very own private beach!

STAY & ACTIVITIES AT AGONDA

The village offers ample stay options with several beach-front properties which offer an uninterrupted view of the sea. A two-person stay at a beachfront cottage would cost approximately INR 4,o00 per day. And, if you wish to visit in the peak holiday season (October through December), then it is advisable to make your bookings well in advance to secure the best accommodation.

South Goa, being less commercialized than North Goa, offers a variety of sight-seeing opportunities from Dolphin-watching, boating in the backwaters to visiting Goan heritage structures which reflect the strong Portuguese, Mughal, and Indian influence on its architecture, for example, the Old Goa Church and Palácio do Deão -- a 200-year-old historic Portuguese mansion built on the banks of the beautiful river Kushavati. (This place also has an on-site eatery). For water sports lovers, if you're in luck, you could get to surf on the beach. There is Aloha Surf School and Samudra Surf School located in the Agonda village (though both were shut during the time we visited).

GETTING AROUND

The best way to travel around Agonda and the near-by villages is by renting a scooter. Typically, the scooty costs INR 350 per day excluding the fuel.

The inroads of the villages have Kaccha (unpaved) roads but that's only for a short stretch, the main roads and National Highways offer a great view of the lush green forests and villages of South Goa. The village women dot the main roads, selling local fish and vegetable produce. If you are a biker, like my boyfriend, South Goa could make for a great off-roading adventure too!

EXPERIENCING LOCAL CUISINE

Most of the beachfront cottages at Agonda offer a wildly beautiful view of the sea and good food.

If you're a vegetarian there is limited authentic Goan dishes to choose from nonetheless we found Fatima's Corner. In our view, this is THE best place in Agonda village. The fish-thali here is a must-try! And, another great feature about this place is its warm and welcoming staff. A meal for two here would cost approximately INR 1,200 (excluding the drinks). The breakfast would cost much less, somewhere around INR 600.

Reaching Agonda

Agonda village is about 1 hour 45 minutes from the Goa International Airport. At the airport itself, you can book GoaMiles taxi and it will safely take you to the destination you wish. A one-way trip to Agonda would cost around INR 1,400 - 1,600.

Agonda - An Experience

The simple fishing village of Agonda and its friendly locals seem like natural hosts, leaving you with a merry vibe and an unforgettable experience!
